Bicycle Carrier - DON"T BUY THIS ONE!
« on: June 14, 2013, 05:00:32 PM »
Hi Swaggers
Has anyone had any experience with with this exact type of bike carrier? It is the type which sits over the rear spare wheel, for me, it is on the back end of the CT.

It is on special now for $65.
http://www.goldcross.com.au/online-store/products/Pacific-Spare-Tyre-Bike-Carrier-2Bike.aspx?pid=322716&menuFrom=7307#Cross
I picked 1 up and fitted it, just hope it is strong enough for the 2 x mountain bikes.

Anyone had any troubles with it? Is there anything to watch out for?
Thanks
Dave

A mate decided to go down the same path even though the salesperson said you shouldn't. His snapped and fell off in the first 5km of a 20000km trip around oz.

I have a good quality one and use it on the tug spare with no problems. Two kids bikes and done about 12000km on outback roads.

I have met others on my travels that have arrived at destinations to discover no bikes and a broken rack hanging off the back of the CT. Back there it cops twice the bumps and undulations and they must be more accentuated. these racks just don't seem to cope. Try the back of the car instead.

Just be sure you know you are adding 10-15kg for each bike (average adult bike) you add to your bike carrier...on top[ of the weight of the tire. Be sure you tire mount will take the shock loading stress it will encounter if you choose to venture off road.

Cheers

I have a rhino 4 bike hitch type which I'm about to put a hitch point on rear of ct.we have used it several times . tiltable lockable at 2 points ( 1 bike can be locked and the hitch itself locks) the downsize to it is the tube is very large diameter , the sons small bike won't fit on . I'd say 20` bmx would be no problems later tho. Once again very strong.

I have this style of carrier and I wouldn't use it for anything but bitumen driving and I only use it on the car, not the CT. Even on the road there have been trips where I arrive at the destination and it has moved from bouncing or the straps have lost tension from it jiggling on the suspension.
Don't get me wrong, it's a handy carrier. i just use it within its limitations.
Just my 2c.

Cheers!
Jono.

I had this style of carrier, not exactly the same model, same thing though...

It came off when I was off road and I had to buy new bikes for my daughters. Never again.

I wish I read this BEFORE we went away for the weekend.
Thankfully, my Mountain Bike is OK, and even more thanx goes to endless telecom rope hidden in the back of the troopy, as with out it, no way I was making it home.
This was a 1 1/2 hour drive to Stinson Park, Christmas Creek Rd, along reasonable roads.
I hung it all off the back of the CT before leaving home, and doing the double check round as Kids were loaded in, I wasn't happy with it on the back of the CT and decided to move it to the back of the Tug so I could keep an eye on it.
Glad I did.
This is a impulse buy when at the bike shop, thought I'd try it out etc, seemed like a good idea at the time, then I looked at it and had 2nd thoughts.
Think I'll be just keeping it for a run down to a park near by and nothing else.
I'll build a proper bike rack on the CT I think.

We have a Rhino bike carrier for the car and can mount it on the CT too. A very solid bike rack but pricey too. Great thing about it though is we don't have to worry about it falling off while we're driving- 4 bikes would be expensive to lose or trash!

I have the ISI rack and it fits 4 bikes, just as solid as the rest of the Patrol. Just sit down when you look for the price. Although its is a small price to pay considering what my bikes are worth to replace.

I know that I could take the rack anywhere the patrol would go

Thanks for the link for the ISI rack. Well worth considering if I decide to go that way with mounting the bikes.
I like the fact they are so solid, well, up until they were compared to a Patrol.... opps, did I say that out loud?

My precious carbon ride will never travel outside the cab, I'd hate to lose it somewhere on the freeway, it cost as much as the camper... It rides in the back seat of my dual cab.

Good thinking! Loading bikes, extra spares etc on the back of a camper trailer is not wise - everything waaay back there gets bucked around a lot more due to it being so far behind the axle centre-line and the dynamics of both (trailer and tug) vehicles' movements

Hope this helps

We bought a Thule carrier, it only holds two bikes, but it is good and strong, as with most Thule products.
Expensive new, but second hand was a score...

Need to get a second mounting plate, then I can run it on back of camper or back of car...

X2 we have one and it would take a real beating before it even looked like giving up. They may be pricey but they will outlast you. You won't find a better company to deal with, their service is outstanding to say the least.

I also had one custom made for our previous trailer, now that we have the GT I will need to come up with another design and see if they can make it up for me.
