Geez, aren't we bunch of old tragics.

One day when i've got some time, i'll put up some funny stories on here about our drag racing.

Hell, in Oct of 98, Mrs Jeepers and i got married on the startline at Willowbank Raceway. It made the 7 news on the sunday night and 9's extra on the Monday.

If ya watch Sunrise in the morings on 7, Michelle Tapper that does a lot of the news link crosses was the one one that covered it for Extra.
She was single then, can't remember her maiden name, but it would be on the VHS tape we have of the wedding.

Christ, my drag racing days started when mum and dad would drop off myself and a mate (about 14 back then) at Surfers and then pick us up at the end of the day on the way home from the beach.

I've raced everything from stockers, rent a cars, street bikes and 10 second street cars to wild bunch and outlaws.

Great fun, lots of highs.........

Never done any driving but used to work on some back in the early days
I did my trade apprenticeship with Wayne Rowe, spent many nights in the shed in Dandenong with Wayne and Andrew and the good old days at Calder, geez they were good times
Played around with Johnny and Michael from ICE Ignitions when they had their Chrysler powered Torana

Used to work for Barry Maher when he had this, with Billy Davis  driving it

About 30 years ago I used to race beach buggies. One of them was a single seat with a ported 10A maxda rotary. It used to go like blazes through the dunes.
Well over here in Perth the original drag strip was down  south of perth at Ravenswood and they used to have open meets where you could race whatever ( as long as it passed safety ) and whoever you wanted. Well I took the flotation tyresoff the buggy, put a set of  TA's , knocked up a rough set of wheely bars and  with a few mates with their buggies ( all rotaries) we headed off.
Had a great time, Mate was setting me up with all sorts from monaro's to falcons and most of the time beating them.
It was doing just under 14 sec at a fraction over 100 mph and that was going through traps just changing into 3rd.

I found out after the meet that my mate was ribbing these guys into racing the "old buggy" and making them put their money where their mouth was. Paid for a good time at the Pinjarra pub on way home.

My other two mates and their buggies with no wheelie bars kept the crowd entertained with full track wheelstands controlled by the steering brakes we had.

Ill try and find the old photos.

On the dunes if you were game enough it would do well over 120 MPH.

If anyone wants to follow the Winternationals from Willowbank this week-end, go to Drag News Australia website and click onto the rolling coverage.

Not as good as being there, but you'll know whats been run within seconds of it happening.

Have always prefered Rallye, Aircraft , off road racing and boats for sport, Drags were ok, but found that the driving in a straight line wasnt enough for me, 13.4 in a mates 308 Torana that we threw together was the quickest official 1/4 I ever did..
Got into club curcuit  racing for a while with a V6 powered  Escort I built, till  money / time / juggling work, became unmanagable and gave it away ..

One day I'll get around to building my Torana for a track day car. I'll make sure I take it down the strip as well once its done, but it wont ever be setup just for drags

I had some idiot try and drag me off a set of lights in his "awesome" great wall, to cut me off in a slip lane, the naturally aspirated 89 GQ made him look pretty friggen stupid....... Wow those things are pieces of sh#t.......
89 GQ diesel patrol........ Dual batts, snorkel, munroe gas magnums with 40mm HD king springs and of course a fridge......

This is by far the most difficult thing I've driven on a race track. We fitted a new engine to it, blinged it up a bit and entered it in a fairly large car show in Street Elite catagory. I didn't get time to fabricate the new fan shroud, so it went to the show with no fans. So, people being people, they dogged it, saying it was nothing but a Trailer Queen. "It's not a street driven car. Doesn't have fans." Seriously, I ran out of time.
So, me being the stubborn pr!ck that I am, thought f### you lot, we won't just drive it, we'll race it. You can't call it a Trailer Queen then.....

Shane.

Mate, if you were working for Brett, you'd know Aden and Skinny Mick that use to do a lot of his paint and artwork.

I see you did some work for Chris too, him and Brett get along like a house on fire......  ;D

I'll have to try to dig up some pics for this thread, i love drag racing.....

Yeah I know Aden. Extremely talented man.

I use to be right into drag racing pre 2000's and before the wife and kids. Had mazda rotaries and hence the user name. Like others I was modifying rotaries way back before they were popular.  My pride and joy was a 1974 RX4 coupe that I restored from an almost wreck.  Apart from the paint I did everything on the car myself including building the engine, which was ported and running a turbo.  In it's day it was a super tough street car.  Very quiet, smooth and an extremely unassuming vehicle.  Ran a best of 10.7 at 130mph and in true street car fashion I would drive it to the track, race it all night, then drive it home again.  It was built for the street and that's were it spent most of it's time though.

Nice RX4 Coupe.

Nice to see there are a few more rotary fans on here!  I always liked the RX4 coupes and owned quite a few.  Here's my first one I brought when I was 16.  This was a time when vinyl roofs were common, rear louvres were cool and 13 inch dragway splats were all the rage!

Rear louvers are still cool :)

Bring on more photos of cool old metal. Love that video of Shane's with the Caddy - impressive stuff for old iron.

Cheers,
Matto :)

At the old Surfers Paradise track when they started running street meets, we were always there when they were on.
We raced anything and everything, as it was good fun.

Once, i was running late to get there, turned up at the entry that was around the corner, paid my money and in i went.

Because they were under way, i had to drive all the way around the back and i thought, this is gunna take me forever.

I got part the way round and turned onto the big infield. Now, i knew the Joy-flight mob did biplane flights outta there, but just didn't cross my mind, as i shot across the airfield in a bright yellow 351 Ford.

About halfway across, i look to my right to see what the noise is to see a biplane at full noise trying take off.

I booted the 351 in the guts, which then broke into wheelspin on the grass airfield.

I'm not really sure, whether we missed by inches or country mile that day, but it was funny.  ;D

The officals asked me to "please, do not do that again' and i think the F word made a few appearences, along with "thinking" "idiot" "killed" "stop laughing" and some others.

That would've been around 1979 or thereabouts.

I would've loved to have known what the pilot said to the passenger on that joyflight.

Jeepers, having flown with Bruce Mc Garvey from that strip many times,it wouldnt have phased him to much ... the voice tube to the helmet earphones doesnt exactly allow for much of anything to be heard over the din of the engine and air rushing through the wing wire bracing on a Tiger Moth..
