Our BBQ hotplate has lots of carbon on it and short of having it sandblasted, what is a safe and non-toxic way of getting that black stuff off and back to bare metal?

Please don't say wire brush, I hope to avoid that mess

I use a high pressure water blaster. Though at times i have used an angle grinder when left to long.

Heat it up and put lots of granulated salt on it, rubbing it, then wash off.

get it hot and ues a lemon cut in half and rub the plate with it

you cant have too many BBQs,

Just the thing to get you out of trouble should one need cleaning.......

If you can take the plate off your BBQ? Do this:
Hopefully it will fit in your laundry tub, otherwise find something it will fit into
Place a sheet of alfoil across the bottom of your tub, place hot plate on top of alfoil, fill up tub with water, sprinkle generous amounts of laundry powder all over your BBQ plate, (detergent doesn't work gotta use powder) let it soak for a few hours. It works by using eletrolisus and works well. I showed my mrs how to clean all the Crome shelves etc out of the oven. Nothing works better.

I usually have a beer in my hand when I am cooking the BBQ. When I finish my beer I fill up the can/bottle with water. As soon as I remove all the meat off the BBQ, I turn the heat up full blast I then use the water and the scraper to clean the grease/food bits off the plate. It wooks really well as the water boils as soon as it touches the plate which helps to remove the grease. It takes only 2 minutes. The BBQ plate will be clean but you have removed its greasy protection from rust so when the plate cools a little, spray generously with cooking spray, that way it is ready to go next time you need it. We bought Our first BBQ in 1991 and retired it in 2008 and the plates were still in great condition.

I think I'll just have to try that with my oven racks! How long do you have to leave it for?
I have tried cleaning other stuff with washing powder in the past and it didn't seem to work that well.

For the BBQ if your plates aren't removable maybe try oven cleaner ...I figure it works reasonably well for ovens.
Or caustic soda, which is probably the main ingredient in a lot of oven cleaners anyway.

I wish my Husband would let me buy a pressure washer

I have cleaned quite a few with styraight out salt, then washed them off, seems to work okay.

Vinegar / Borax / Bicarb mix ... into hot as you can handle it wearing gloves water and use a nylon bristle scrubbing brush ... It just works ....

Like warm vinegar and a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle works to remove shower scum ... It just works ...

Laundry Isle. Used to be in a red lidded white container ... now it's dark green lidded, light green (I think) container. Same manufacturer though.

Napisan is good for this as well. Also good for cleaning the fat traps in stove exhaust fans, brilliant in fact.

My plate for my WeberQ100 goes in the dishwasher every now again..

Works quite well, but not sure how it'd go being so baked on...

I like to use a really toxic oven cleaner it brings barbs up like brand new

kinda a not really non toxic way of cleaning is also a hot (ish) hotplate and rinseaid just clean down with white vinegar afterwards , make friends with ya local bistro chef to get the commercial stuff

100% never fail way is throw plenty of salt on it light bbq get plate hot slice 2 - 4 lemons in half and use the lemons to rub the salt in and squeeze the lemon as you go when the salt absorbs the lemon juice and oil scape off with scraper. then it will be clean enough to lick but wait until it cools down completely before you give it the lick test. but i normally throw it in my mates acid bath at his work shop
