Wow.......How rude is that?
« on: May 28, 2013, 08:53:34 PM »
I have been in email contact with an online store that makes all things canvas and say they do custom orders as well. I asked them if they could make some canvas swag style bags for me and provided as many details as I could regarding what I wanted, including measurements and photos of the finished product. The one thing I was unable to supply was one measurement (the thickness of the bags), as it was too hard to determine what would be best and felt I could probably leave it up to them to decide and then they could get back to me with a suggestion. I wouldn't expect to go ahead with the order until all things were agreed upon by both of us. The first email reply was somewhat short, to which I politely replied and then I get this......

hi
you need to tell me the depth you would like.
because if i guess and i am wrong, who is going to get the blame?
i suggest you put everything together and measure the height you would like it
cheers

After that I think I will be taking my business somewhere else.

Probably not as diplomatic as they could have been but I don't see it as too rude?

Sorry, but I don't see a problem with their reply.
It certainly cuts straight to the point, but I don't think it's rude.

How do they know what you want to put in the bag?

Perhaps try reading their reply again, and imagine it with a different tone.....

Nah I disagree, a proactive business owner would have said. "yep how about we make it x by y by z" this will be the outside measurement of your bag so just double check what it's goin into and if that suits I'll get you a quote based on that" instead, he was a wanker

I can totally see their point, but it could have been phrased a lot better. It may be a case of them not having the best communication skills, or they may also just be complete twats.

X 2,

I have found him great to deal with, he has made custom stuff for me and it has always got it right, but he can be straight to the point

From reading your post I think he has misunderstood you, I think you are asking what weight material (thickness) to use but he is referring to the height of the bag

dont see a problem ,
can you imagine how many emails he must get per day ... all he asked you to do is supply him with want you wanted / your measurements
what would have happened if you left it up to hima nd it didnt fit / suit you , would you stick your hand up and admit it was your mistake by not giving him all the measurements or be like evryone else and find someone esle to blame
try being in business and look at it from his side

or perhaps take your business elsewhere and let him get on with dealing with clients that are orginized

your money ... your choice

the joys of the net / emails , how things can be taken and read , everyone's different

That's what I was expecting. I was hoping to get some feedback and suggestions from him about what to do.

I completely understand that he may have a history of people who have not gone ahead with an order for some reason or other but that's nothing to do with me.

It isn't good business sense to put off your customers like that over an enquiry.

By the way, I didn't mention his name or business on purpose, as I wasn't trying to black list him.

Hi Kiwi_Camper
From what I have read here, I would say that it is a communication lapse, goodness knows I have had my share of them.  Perhaps sme polite diplomacy, asking the manufacturer exactly what is required in the way of measurements / dimensions, and givng the conditions which the item could be exposed to would allow the manufacturer to get things right.
It sounds to me like the manufacturer has had the fingers burnt by trying to do the right thing, and not having all details, so the provision of such could satisfy both parties in the long run.

How rude is it to post up a personal email for all the world to see and then criticise a business because they asked you to provide a measurement he has no way if knowing?

Do you think he has posted your email up on a forum complaining that you didn't give all the details and called you stupid?

There's always more than one way to look at things.

Best thing you can do know is go else where.
Even if they do guess exactly what you think you want
and make it perfectly your not going to be happy.
Just my observation

I didn't criticise this business owner for asking me for a measurement, I was responding to his abrupt email implying that I would renege on the order, and blame him if he got it wrong :D

Much as I appreciate being able to buy things here and overseas on the internet, there's a lot to be said for going into a shop and dealing with someone face to face.

Firstly, don't name the business as things can become complicated.

Secondly, IMO, I think he is well within his rights to seek clarification and don't see it as rude. So, if he did get it wrong wrt the thickness of canvas, would you still pay cause he got it wrong? Also, when ordering anything you have to be clear and concise otherwise the chances of getting it right are high and all the risk lies with him. Put yourself in his shoes for a moment and a customer was giving you such risk, would you accept? I see nothing wrong with his request, IMO.....Good luck with getting what your after...:-)
