How do I turn my tyre air pump into an air blower
« on: May 23, 2013, 05:41:48 AM »
This may be a simple one but I don't seem to be able to find the answer.....

Are there attachments you can buy that attach to the end of a tyre air pump hose/valve, that turn it into an air blower for doing things like 'cleaning dust out of air filters' ?

Thanks

Yep, sure is.  You just need a hose fitting, some hose and your blower/duster.  Easy.

G'day Mark, I use a little plastic attachment supplied with some small compressors' it's for blowing up footballs etc. there is also a very fine metal one, they both have valve stem threads to fit on your compressor.

I find the best way to do that is blow the spare tyre up to like 80 psi or so, then have a hose with an adapter to click onto the spares valve at one end and the blower on the other.

That way you get a good volume of air at good pressure, rather than the little puff you get out of a 12v compressor.

When the tyre is getting low, disconnect the blower hose and top it up again with the compressor.

Worked for me for years.

Hey JGM,
Up there for thinking,
Down there for dancing,
And in the middle for having a good time.

Great idea mate.

.... blow the spare tyre up to like 80 psi or so,

Hi, makes a cheap air tank, and is good for re-seating a recalcitrant tyre bead too.

cheers

I wouldnt think your average TJM/ARB/Ebay/Blah compressor would pump enough air to be a decent blower for airfilters etc...
the spare tyre would

I wouldnt be taking the tyre to 80 psi, without checking the max inflation limits for your spare first .. might do a bit of damage if it went bang.

Hi EDZ
I'v actually taken all sorts of spare tyres up to 100psi for use as an air reservoir.  Of course just let them down to normal pressure if you need to use them on the road.  Never had one go bang yet.

If you are going to do that with a spare tyre like under a landcruiser on the winch thing, just let the winch down a bit before you inflate it to 80-100 psi, then wind it back up again.  The extra pressure can put too much tension on the chain and you'll never get it down without deflating the tyre.  The same goes for other bolted mounts too I guess.
