Hi
Just come from my local Mitsubishi dealer and of course got offered a good price on the 2.5 turbo GLX Double Cab .
As I have never owned a diesel 4x4, what is the general feelings on this vechicle.
My thoughts a 2nd hand Hilux abt 5yrs old and 100,000 clicks is going to be upwards of $25000. A new GLX $30,000.
Don't want to buy a problem but I think the GLX would be good to tow CT and would handle dirt roads etc.
Your thoughts please.

Hi Jeff

They are a good bus.  Nice rear seat room too due to the curved c pillar area.

They have an issue with carbon in the intake. They have redesigned them so the sensor sits higher however these still play up.  Some are replaced almost at every service - I kid you not. 

A new model is on the way so these will plummet like all Mitsu's as they hold onto the model line with no mods for far too long. 

If your gunna keep it longer term then sweet.  Expect the run around with the carbon issue though.  I understand that if you drive them hard all the time they take longer to carbon up.

The new crew (ranger/bt/colorado/VW etc) are all larger internally too.

Brother has one and other than the carbon issue and low range not selecting once he is happy.

On the triton there is a sensor inside the manifold that once it gets gunked up sends incorrect signals to the fuel injection and they run rough.  The fix is to replace the manifold or at least clean them out.  They did a redesign but the issue continues.  It is a common issue for new diesels but most only gunk up over big k's.  Prados do it around the 100k but will run okay until well into the 200k.  Just a design failing.

I wouldn't NOT buy one because of it however it is something to be discussed with the sales manager and find out exactly what they are doing about it.  If they play dumb you know their pants are on fire.  If they are honest and up front and tell you what they are doing about it then thats better. There is a work around to stop it but that would void the warranty (blank off EGR).  You could always have it replaced under warranty until it runs out then do the mod.  Its not hard to do.

Jeff I have a ML Triton and love it. As dazzler has mentioned there are a few issues with Carbon build up but this is not confined to the Triton... Its a result of the EGR system and effects most cars that use this pollution reduction system.

If you haven't already done so check out the newtriton forum, heaps of information over there and lots of "fixes" for some of theses issues.

The two main fixes for the carbon build up is either an EGR blank or a catch can.
I'm running a provent 200 and haven't had any problem since fitting it.   
The EGR blank will void warranty but can be removed before every service.....that's what a lot of people do.
Some even leave it in and it's not noticed. 
 
I wouldn't let this stop you buying a triton at the prices they are at the moment.......they are a good bus too.

I might have this wrong -- but I thought the issue EGR was with the 3.2L motor setup and not with  the current 2.5L motor as it's a different setup and was O.K. -- correct me if I am wrong (going to see heaps of links here soon as I bothered to Google) ;)

From what I have read and my brothers exp is they will reflash the ecu and tell you it's fixed. Then do that again next time until you jump up and down (not in the yippee Toyota ad way) and then replace the manifold.

Then start the game all over again.

They are a good bus despite this.

Great truck. We have a fair fleet of diesel twin cabs here at work, and the Triton is up there with the best. Great fuel economy, even when towing, nice roomy cabs, and a pretty powerful engine.
Bang for buck, No. 1 ute in class I reckon.

Both motors have the same problem, 2.5 is the same motor as the challenger, same issue in the challenger.

It is a design fault in the engine and they will ALL suffer from it at some stage.

On that I found mitsi very good with it all they were always willing to give me a loan car and never once tried to fob me off so big thumbs up to them for that. They tried everything to fix it and right up till the end were trying to work it out.but even they were at a loss.heck the dealer and mech did not build it I would say. So they were not the enemy it was that bloody robot number 3 he must have been going through a rough robot style divorce lol ;D

So why did I get rid of it , cause it was a lemon , that's not to say all of them are I know people with 200oook on the clock , just like computers sometimes you just get a dud one.every car make and model suffer from issues ,

So go in with your eyes wide open pick a dealer close to home and keep the service book up to date.

Just cross ya fingers you get a good one  :D ;D

Pretty bloody good value right now.

Yes it is a known issue......just like some other manufacturers  in the class have injector issues others have turbo issues etc.
I'd rather be slowed than stopped.
Any diesel with an EGR system will eventually suffer from this   
It's not a mits specific problem......there are ways to avoid it happening.

Dazzler......I'd love to know what this so called "fix kit" is?
All I know of is the catch can or blank plate........no kit as such.

I'd say yours would have been sorted sooner if you persisted and took it to that "other" dealer.
 You had a very unfortunate run.......I know for a fact the previous owner never had an issue.

It's a blanking kit on the forum for those who cant make one. From memory a blank plate and gaskets.  My point is if they sell them there is a market for it.

I want to be clear here. I am over the BS that some owners go on with about their precious goddam cars. We are not discussing our wives here but chunks of metal.  If there is a problem suck it up. Imagine how many potential patrol owners would have been saved thousands of dollars in repair bills if the BS about it only affecting a few "early" ones had not happened.

As soon as you hear "all vehicles have problems" you know the vehicle has become their bitch. :)

The SPECIFIC issue with Triton is the manifold design.  It IS an ongoing issue but it shouldn't deter you from buying one if you are happy to fix it with a mod or get the ecu reflashed and manifolds replaced routinely.

Here is my 20c worth.

I have the same model Challenger.

I think the best way to defeat the carbon issue is to fit a catch can from day one. Provent sell them for about $200 bucks.

Patrol owners have been doing this for years knowing to well what their history is. It doesn't stop people buying them.

Buy the Triton, fit a catch can and enjoy trouble free driving.

I won't touch one, not because of the engine, I just don't like the  over hang of the tub on the arse end.

Yeah just a case of bad luck, the manifold change caused some big issues non related to the prev owner , I never thought that  ;D as it drove perfect all the way home.

I know lee prob would have sorted it ,but I had enough by then  ;D like I said though I,m wise enough to know one car does not reflect an entire make or model.

Don't know if I could ever buy one again but they are a good truck esp now for the $$$ asked.

Just for the original poster - no matter what car you google you will find negatives , some just have more active forums than others so there is more info.

Big  :cup: :cup:to the newtriton.net boys and gals , great forum with loads of top info , prob 2nd best forum I've ever used :D :D

My NS Pajero just had the manifolds replaced as the second attempt to fix engine surging under light throttle, the first being a reflash of the ECU.
Step 3 was clean the EGR valve and reflash again.....

Still surging.... perhaps the fly by wire throttle is buggered...
6 weeks to go to end of warranty. I am determined to get this sorted....
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

Don't panic to much about the warranty.  If the problem you are having now hasn't been fixed once it runs out, it will still have to be fixed at no charge to you. I'm fairly certain any repairs done carry their own warranty of sorts.
