« on: May 09, 2013, 05:30:26 PM »
Hi Guys
Question time again.
What do you guys think is the best freezer fridge for my cub CT.
Cub are fitting the fridge box on the drawer bar for me. The unit will take a 40/50 litre fridge.
Waico,Evakool ARB are the ones that have come up in my search.
I have no knowledge so would like some guidance.
Thanks
Jeff

ARB have a variety and a good rep. Back-up Aust. wide as well. They are a bit more exy in price than some of their competitors. We have a 40lt Waeco that's been running non-stop for 4 yrs now and has been excellent value for money. Most fridges on the market today offer great service with very similar features. Comes down to price and preference I think.
Cheers.

They would all be fine. You didn't mention Engel, which would also work well.

I've recently become acquainted with EvaKool; performance and value for money would be hard to beat. I have a 60L fridge/freezer in my Trackabout and its a great fridge. I love that it can be a fridge or freezer as well as being a combo unit.

Hi Jeff,

I thoroughly recommend a 47L ARB fridge for a Cub Camper Fridge box, the 47L ARB fridge fits the Cub draw bar fridge box with a couple MM spare on each side.

I purchased my ARB fridge in 2009 it was from the first batch of 47L ARB fridges two years and nine months later the temp control went bad, I took it back to ARB they tested it and 4 days later I was loading a replacement brand new in the box ARB fridge into my wagon, The first batch had a non replaceable  thermister, they are now a replaceable part. I am VERY happy with the ARB warranty service.

I have added a cycle lock to my fridge slide to stop it taking a walk in camp.
I have also insulated and vented my Cub Escape fridge box. I would also recommend upgrading the Cub 12V wiring for the fridge.

with 2 x 120AH AGM batteries in the camper and some led lighting I get 4-6 days running of the fridge set at 1 deg.

My only wish would be a taller Cub Fridge box to fit a larger ARB fridge.

Yep i've got the white fibreglass 60ltr Evakool too.....and it works well, very happy with it.

Also what i have heard or read somewhere, possibly here on Myswag, is that the parts required to fix an Evakool are all just standard generic fridge spares, (not unique to Evakool)......  that just about any fridge shop anywhere can fix them...... in case you can't get into a Evakool service shop..... Someone here might be able to correct me or give more info on my above non confirmed statement.

I've had my Evakool apart (to replace damaged wiring). They just have a universally used Danfoss compressor/condensor/evaporator assembly (as used by the majority of 12v fridge companies such as ARB, Waeco, Bushman) with a simple mechanical thermostat. All simple, basic and reliable stuff.

We use a 60L Eva Kool as our main fridge and it works well, a 40L Primus as our freezer also a good fridge, we did have a Engel 40L but it died on our last trip away but it was 31 years old so I've got nothing to complain about, I think the Eva Kool would be my choice,

I have had my Engel now for Bout 30 years. My dad had it before me when I was a wee one. Still runs great today. I would find it hard to change from Engel purely from the great value we have received from the current fridge. Hasn't missed a beat either.

It is a bit like the Ford or Holden discussion.
I have 4 fridges over about 30 years.  3 Engels then Waeco.  Always sold to get newer lower power draw model or larger fridge (Waeco).
Between Engel and Waeco, I would choose Engel.  Waeco is ok but you get what you pay for.
Extra insulation of Everkool is worth considering.

evakool

>>>Cub are fitting the fridge box on the drawer bar for me.

While Evakool make a good fridge they are too wide to fit in a Cub draw bar mounted fridge box.
The ARB 47L at 380mm wide with 2mm to spare at each side fits snugly , also the controls and temp gauge are at the front of the fridge so work well in the Cub fridge box.

Shame about the evakool not fitting. They have much better insulation than the waeco/engel/arb/ironman etc fridges

That's not quite the fact. Similar fridges (most brands) are up to the task/comparison. As they are all built on the basic fundamentals, it comes down to brand preference. At the end of the day some will attest to the life of the product (engle) as others will attest to the brand (ARB, EVACOOL, etc.) All have invested a lot of time and money into their brand and have stuck to basic principles that work to result in good outcomes (refrigeration). Some will argue the point but at the end of the day basic science will dictate the outcome/result. Hence most 12v fridges have a good reputation. It comes down to accessories such as internal lights and external handles etc. That's where the $$$$ come into it.

Twould be nice if someone brought one out that didnt have a digital display with the pressure type buttons (sorry techo's for the lack of lingo).

Some nice rocker switches and rotary knobs woud be good so you dont have to replace the whole panel when they go for eternal sleep.
My alternative to cheap import trailers;

Your current Engel only has a pressure on/off switch.  Compressor control is via a dial.  Digital temp read out is not linked into control panel in any way and can fail without causing unit to fail.
