Has anyone stayed at poverty creek bribie island?
« on: May 07, 2013, 08:38:10 PM »
We were wanting to go there and was hoping to be able to camp in the tent section but with two campers, I rang today and they said campers had to stay in the camper trailer section and you can't have a fire there. We really want to have a fire and you can ony camp in the tent section with a fire. Just wondering if anyone has stayed there and is camping in the tent section possible with a camper? Or why don't they let you?

We have camped there a number of times and we manage to fit our Modcon into the drive way of most of the campsites. I'd recommend trying to get campsite 10 or 11 as these sites have the biggest driveway/car park area.

I have a few trip reports for Poverty Creek in this thread which may help...

I'm sure you will have a great time there it one of my favourite spots.

Thanks gutters! I was hoping someone had been there and stayed in the tent area. I read you trip report and it's made me want to go there even more. The lady I called was just From the gov website and she just flat out said no. I wonder if there is a number for the ranger there that you can check with to make sure they would def allow us to camp two trailers before we got there. From reading your trip report sites 10 & 11 are the most roomy and best for two campers side by side?
Thanks so much!

The staff that answer the calls to the 13 number are call centre staff that take calls from a variety of Qld state government enquiry services and rely on the NPSR website as a reference. I would take their advice with a grain of salt. I work in this industry and did a tour of the "Smart Services Qld" new site and was shocked to learn that they use the same booking system as the public for camp bookings...

Anyway back on topic...

The rangers do come a round and check your camping permits and vehicle access permits. On our last visit I specifically asked if it were OK to setup our camper in the driveway of our campsite and was told no problem as long as I didn't prevent others from accessing their sites and I followed the normal rules. I have always found the Rangers on Bribie to be reasonable friendly guys.

I don't think you will have a problem.

Thanks so much gutters! Yeah I was surprised to hear the lady say she was googling the website and then she read a few things out to me which I was sure I had read word for word on the website I was on.
Okay well I think we will still go then cause it looks like such a lovely spot. Do you tnk I should try and book 10 & 11? Like are they combined in one of those wooden fence things?

I don’t want to sound negative or take anything away for the Gutters family experience, but what’s attracted you to Poverty Point??

I regularly camp at Bribie and each time I’ve stopped in at Poverty Point I’ve early been carried away by mozzies. Yes the Ocean beach camping does get it’s fair share of mozzies as well, but at least you can get away from them if you spend enough time down on the beach.

Campsites 9, 10 and 11 all share the same carpark space, the actual campsites are over the bollards in the grassed area that surrounds the car park. Check out the campground map on the NPSR page for Poverty Creek if you haven't already done so. It is the biggest space you can get your camper in but you do need to allow enough space for the other campers cars for sites that you haven't booked if that makes sense? If these sites are booked like on our last 2 visits we squeezed into campsite 7.

I agree 100% about the mozzies they can be terrible at times. We usually camp on the Ocean side during the warmer months and once its cooler and drier head over to Poverty Creek and Gallaghers point. I find anytime between May and late August to be the best time on the western side of the island. Just take plenty of repeallant and mozzie coils just in case.

Hi Gutters,

What is Gallagher Point like? I have a soft floor camper and was thinking of checking it out over a weekend, do you have any photos of the campground?

Thanks

Sorry Maltek, no photos of Gallagher Point. Its a smaller campground than poverty creek and has no facilities so you have to be fully self sufficient. The good news is that there are no bollards so all sites will take a camper and  you can have fires. The campsites are also right on the water so you don't have to walk to far.
