Have you a price in mind? Tell them this is what you want to pay and give them your number. Come the end of the month they will call you. Just make sure your price is reasonable.

Go to several dealers, tell them your price and wait.
You have to be realistic but.
Realise that you have the power in the relationship.  You have the time and the money.  If you have the time wait for them to call you. Be precise in what you want. IE: A white, 7 seater with nudgebar, tint, elec rust proofing, AT tyres.  That gives them wiggle room to start the negotiation.  Be flexible. They may be able to give you a black one for the price you want.

IE they may agree to the price but without a few of the options.

Last tip: Enjoy the process, this will likely be one of the very few times you will do this (hopefully).

I am no good at this stuff however a friend always emails all of the dealers in the area specifying the vehicle he is after (colour/specs etc) and there best no trade drive away deal.  He is happy to take a demonstrator.
Reckons he gets the best deals.

Another way i usually go is i will agree on their price BUT it is conditional

Yup, do your maths for trade (if any), finance (if any), new price and tell the sales dude what it is. Get him to write a quote and be specific as in 'genuine' for any accessories etc. Most of all if the dude says no walk away, he'll call back.

Always walk away from their final offer.  I will say it again. ALWAYS WALK AWY FROM THEIR FINAL OFFER.  Kindly leave your contact details with them before you leave, decline their offer and tell them to contact you if they change your mind. They will call back with a final offer that will be an improvement on their previous " this is the absolute best offer we can give you"
When they call back, that's is when you agree to the price if they include factory floor mats, headlight protectors etc.  you got to be tough and patient.  Good things happen to those who wait.

THanks Brucer, intersting read.  I have used the 'tender' method described by Dazzler. You need to know exactly what you want, and specify genuine accessories. You must give a deadline, for the quote and a delivery time frame. I always specify Friday 4.00pm and that I'll make a decision over the weekend.  well when I say always ive done it 3 times... but I think I did ok, and saved plenty of time.

I used a broker and then made a couple of phone calls until I had dealers walk away then I new I had a reasonable deal, went with the broker for the best price play one off the other, the broker get paid by the dealer do its no cost to you.
PS I used auto advantage as the broker don't know if the are in SA but.

My credit union has a car buying service and also my trade union through "Union Shopper" have a car buying service.  Have used both in the past and very happy with their prices.

Go to several dealers ask each for their best drive away price, let them know up front you won't haggle and you won't notify them if the are not the lowest price.  I saved $9000 in 2005 on a new Hyundai for my wife by doing this.  As others have stated it is a buyers market at the moment.  Good luck with it, look forward to some pictures.

We have had success by contacting several dealers and letting each of them know they are competing for our business.
I usually give them the best price I have found minus $1000 to beat.
As they um and ah I offer them a shot at the finance as long as they match/beat the best rate I can find.
Depending on the price of the car, you are usually better to leave the options out of the deal as they can attract luxury car tax at 33%

Dealers I have spoken to recently have agreed to negotiate any accessories etc separately which will save on the govt revenue raising.

As said above end of month is the best time. Coming into the end of the financial year is even better.
A dealer may be willing to drop a few thousand on a sale to meet a manufacturer target which will come with cash bonuses, usually out weighing the discount they give you.

Missus works for a car dealership, she reckons to get the best deal, march into the showroom and ask to talk to someone in the fleet department, give the retail guys a miss.

tell them to take $5000 straight of the top before you even start negotiating, if they say no start walking. just went through it myself. just remember what ever they offer you on your trade is what their prepared to lose, which makes people think there getting a good deal. be strong and dont let them talk over you.
