What to do with rubbish
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:20:21 AM »
There are lots of threads about rubbish dumping, littering etc., but I was wondering what decent travellers do with the rubbish they create (and keep) on a long trip. If you're heading home, no problem, but if not . . .
Do travellers drop it into a public bin in the next town, in a roadside layby (if there is a bin and/or room in it) or do they seek out the municipal rubbish dump?
All comments and experiences welcome.

Cheers, Tony

I usualy stop at a roadside waste collection points e-route to next destination or home.  I'm not sure if other state's have these.  In Qld these sites have large bins for domestic waste collection.  If there aren't any of these avilable I double bag, carry until next town and find an industrial bin.  Also most Servo's have industrial bins.

If we are bush camping I will burn paper and cardboard. I bag the rubbish and dispose of it at the next opportunity like the public pit in William Creek and Innamincka. I will also use public bins but not to the point of a mass disposal.

I think remote area councils could do alot more to help themselves with large industrial bins on major routes/intersections... Some already do.

This wont fix it 100% - nothing ever will, just a fact... but if the lazy arse ****ers that leave Shit everywhere know theres a bin 10klms up the road they may not be inclined to just toss it out the winda, or leave it at the nice bush spot they found.

Also try and minimise the amount of packaging etc you take prior to leaving. Where possible I try and remove any unnessary cardboard boxes, bags etc by repackage into reusable containers. Also if on a long trip I try and do that when restocking at the supermarket. Get rid of it in the town before heading off again.

Don't use bottled goods, stick with cans as they can be flattened down to very small, plus lighter when empty

Same as above. Minimize wastage before leaving.
our home recycling bin gets emptied fortnightly, we are only two people and its full by end of week. Everything now cones with too much packaging.

Also. Annoys me when a bun is clearly full,ànd they still leave rubbish around it, on top of it.

Costs money to deal with waste, but if we buy fuel, a small rubbish etc I don't feel is taking the piss or advantage.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....
