Well, it seems we are moving into a CT! YAY! We will be able to visit more places!

What do you find works best for kids bedding? I was thinking stretchers or bunks so that they were off the floor, however husband suggested swags - we can then use them without the CT set up, and store on the mattress for travel. Thoughts? Kids are six and eight.

Any good links to bedding suppliers that are good value?

Thanks so much!

Hi gypsymama you may find some info in these threads but as stated in one of your other threads our kids swags. But in the majority of cases we can just use the swag mattresses and their doonas :)

Swags work for some people and not for others... i got mine from a bloke that used it once and got claustrophobia.

Stretchers can be good, they work for us.

We have stretchers for the kids and the roller tubs containing their clothes and toys fit perfectly under them.   They sleep in Oztrail biker swags on top.  When we are doing an overnighter, we dont put up the stretchers and the kids sleep in their swags on the ground....not set with hoops though...the swags help them stay warm and gives them (or me!) the flexibility to sleep outside if its a nice night.  They can have the mesh zipped if if there are mozzies about (inside)  They just get chucked on top of the soft floor (under the cover) in transit.  Works for us.  They the kids have a swag to take for sleepovers etc, just put the sleeping bag and pillow inside, roll up and away you go!  They were only abotu $120 online.

We have 3 kids (4, 6 and 8) and are about to embark on a 6 month+ adventure around WA first and then Australia.

Ended up getting some stretchers and those travel mats. They fold up fairly small and the kids have tested then over the last couple of weeks and think they are great.

Our main concern was just getting them off the floor really.

I'll definitely check out swags though as camping out if weather permits sounds fun.

Sometimes inexpensive swags in the long run cost you more as you may upgrade due to quality. make sure you google and review your intended purchase before hand.

Oztrail appear to have a lot of positive reviews. You may want to also check your local harris scarfe who stock Oztrail swags and always have then for between $130-00 to $200.00. depending on model.

Severe lack of Harris Scarfe in this area.  ;D

Might give them a go and see what happens.

We recently go one of these for our 16 yr old  it has plenty of room and a comfy mattress, we use it as a flat swag/bed in the tent or can be pitched if sleeping out side.

Just purchased two 100mm single foam mattresses for our 14yo daughters 3 man tent from Super A-mart. They go on top of the bed in the camper during transit. My daughter and her friend report that they were very comfortable during a recent trip.

I'm going to give the $140 oztrail ones on eBay a go. If worse comes to worse we'll just remove the mattresses and use them, and save the swags themselves for other outings. But the kids are pretty excited - lots of their mates have swags, and they're looking forward to being able to sleep outside when they're old! lol.

Hi gypsymama. We use Oztrail Leisure (or 4WD) mats. We got them from Kangaroo tent city, and got x4 at once and got a really good deal for them. I have never slept on anything other than the mattress, but hubby is in the Army and said there is nothing worse than sleeping on a stretcher in cold weather, as you have cold air surrounding you. I think i would prefer a stretcher with mat on top though cause sometimes I get back pain after a few nights, but i have a bad back from an injury when younger; plus with x4 (bub still in portacot) of us in the tent we dont have room for stretchers. Our eldest kid (2.5yo) loves sleeping in his sleeping bag on the mat next to Dad.

Gypsymama,

My boys (5,8,13) all use oztrail cooper swags http://www.oztrail.com.au/WebPage.gtl?Product=CSW-COO-D?currentgroup=ZZZ002?currentsubgroup=SWAG coupled with a good sleeping bag they are more than comfortable. They often use them inside if a friend comes to visit too. They slept outside  last easter , ad it was quiet chilly everynight.

I hope that helps

Cheers Chippy :D

2 kids. 11 and 9. We use swags with a sleeping bag. Simple. No dramas to make, or store on top of the bed. Thought about stretchers but its just more to set up and pack up.

Cheers.

When the kids were younger (like 4 and 6) we had a CT and they slept on stretchers (those oztrail bunk type ones that could be set up seperate as well) and light foam matresses that came with them. That worked for us because we only took the stretcher legs off and threw them onto the camper bed (it was a soft floor style camper).

We had to sell the camper after which we went to hiking style tents etc for a bit before getting a touring tent and then swags as well (swags means you can store most of the bedding inside them and throw them on the roof rather than all that bulk taking up most of your storage space in the car etc.....not so much an issue with a camper though!).

So now our kids being 8 and 10 have their own swags, got them decent ones (Burke and Wills brand) that they will hopefully keep well after they leave home :) We have started looking at buying a camper trailer for ourselves to suit us now and beyond kids, but the kids will still be keeping their swags (weather they end up sleeping sheltered in a camper or outside). They absolutely love them.

So you could go for cheap swags if you're just after a convenient way to store all the kids bedding and roll it up etc and don't think the kids will end up using them much outside in nasty weather etc. But if you think it's something your kids will love and if you can see them using the swags (instead of their own tent etc as they get older) then go for a more decent one that will last them into their teen / adult years.
Only other consideration is their age, I'd probably be a little worried about 6yr old getting out of the swag at night and wondering off or something, but then again if they're a bit young just make them use it inside the camper as more of a bed until they're old enough to kick outside.

If storing bedding and what not isn't an issue and you don't want to go to the big expense of good swags then you could be better off looking at stretchers, self inflating mattresses etc, but this does require a bit more effort in set up etc.
