Mail holding by post offices
« on: April 21, 2013, 06:49:07 PM »
Hi, just wondering how to go about getting our mail sent ahead to a post office.   The Aus Post site talks about redirection (which we have done to our son), and holding mail, which they talk about as holding your mail while you are away and then delivering it .  We are wanting to get our son to send mail on to Esperance or Perth for us.  Thanks for your help.  Kris

G'day Kris & Kev,

I've had PO boxes for close to 20 years, so get to know the PO staff well enough that I've been able to arrange that if I leave them some cash, I can phone through with a forwarding address, and they'll send my mail in an Express Post envelope to wherever, be it a caravan park, or Care Of the Whoop-Whoop Post Office, etc.

We also got mail sent ahead to where ever we were. As we schooled our oldest while on the road for 6 Months we would just tell them were we were. Just need to remember to plan a bit - worked for us.

Great thread topic.

Was actually just about to do a search for mail holding/forwarding threads..........(dodgy slow internet connection)

Looking to head off and wondering what to do about postage, bills, payments etc.
Things like council rates, water rates, insurance premiums, bank statements, other important things...Weve just been given approval for the IVF treatment programme. They will let us know our schedule by post.
SGIO insurance sill dotn do email alerts.... Neither does our dodgy economic wasting city council either.....

How do others do it?

yep, that was one of my thoughts during my thoughts and dreams.......
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

When my parents go away for extended periods of time (overseas not in a CT) they forward their mail to me. THose that look important I open, scan and email to them. They check their email everytime they get into a town and just go to an internet cafe etc.

Thanks all for your replies, we have every bill we can direct debit, so not a problem.  Registrations is the only thing we can't prepay, so get our family to email us that and we bpay.  Kev had to renew his liscence, doesn't expire till end of May, but did not arrive in mail before we left. Remember the days when you got it over the counter on the day!  So it is at our sons'.  We think we will ring Esperance PO today just to check ok to send it care of them.  Thanks.  It is one of those problems to be sorted when heading off for long term.  Kris

There are other options too. Look in some of the Caravaning Mag's often there are advertisements for mail forwarding. Here's a couple I just googled  http://www.landbase.com.au/   http://www.passthepost.com.au/how-it-works/

Not used any personally, but will in the future I expect.

We got my sister to pack our mail and send it to us.
All you have to do is get it sent C/O (Enter Post office here), like we di to Tamworth, but it missed us by 4 days, and they  redirected it to us in Gympie. Works a treat. I think it is official called "Post Resparant" or something but C/O works.
I also Express posted a pack to my Dad in Bamaga with spare parts for his trailer. Not a problem.

Don't trust Aust. Post to do the right thing. After a recent 5 week trip to Tassie we were alerted by our daughter that mail was again being delivered. Oh sorry your application said 5 Apr but they entered it as 5 Mar. No apologizes, no explanation. But after a 1 hour phone call from Tassie it was finally sorted. Guess who paid for the phone call. Even after initially paying for the Mail Hold service!!!.
Not an isolated instance, this is the second time we have had a problem.
Complain if you wish, they will only cover each others A%se.
Not happy Jan !!!
