Trak Shak needs a respray
« on: March 16, 2013, 11:06:37 AM »
Good Morning All,
Is anyone has had experience respraying a Trak Shak, my one is 18 months old and needs urgent attention,
Surface rust and paint peeling. What would be the best way to tackle the job.
We leave in Melbourne South East would you be able to recommend  someone to do it.
Cheers Thierry

X 2 dodgy company to deal with these days unfortunately. I bought one had it for six months and sent it back, total refund due to all the issues and lies. Very disappointing as they are a great design for families.

With regard to your re spray, I would suggest removing the top box and having the trailer blasted either all over or just the parts you want painted. I would then take it to a quality auto refinisher. If its just the front you are talking about you should get out of it for about $1500.

Hi GeoffA,

The warranty was 12 months, the trailer was send back to the factory after only 6 months since delivery, I was promised a respray but upon receiving back it has only been touch up.
The Victorian dealer has been very helpful and understanding but dealing with Sydney HO has been very disappointing to said the least....
We really love our unit and suit our family perfectly, I would like to keep it for as long as I can, hence my decision to take up the work myself.

I'd be shattered.........

We had a '97 model TS, made in SA. Bought it new. Apart from a few stone chips, the paint was still like new when we sold it in 2005.

Hope you get it sorted.

The disappearing act of the Sydney based owner. I know it well, too busy attending shows trying to flog his product than deal with the issues of customers. 5 other people I know of pulled out of their deals when i was purchasing mine. The promises he made me stretched over 18 months before we finally got our camper and then it was a POS (excuse the French). Mates have ones made in the 1990s and even 2005 (fully imported) that they are really happy with. Unfortunately after the current jokers took over (about 2008) and started to substitute the quality and integrity of the product it all went down hill.

I am sure you can sort the issues out to a much higher standard yourself. Just a shame you have to.

Should have done the same as you Jas,
I guest my dealing at the start was with the Vic. dealer and all was great. All went downhill after that...
The surface rust appears everywhere, Boat rack, tool box, front and rear gate etc....
I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, lots of money and time wasted
Cheers Thierry

Im in the middle of organising similar work to mine.
Im using a company call bungo blasting and restoration.
They mainly focus on old mustangs, holdens etc etc. But they are exceptional at the work they do and also if they say it will be ready by a time it will be.  ;D i dunno how quickly they could get it in for you as they are pretty busy at the moment. They are based up on the border of wodonga, so about three hours away, but the money they save you should easily cover fuel and time.
If you want a number pm me and ill see if i can find it for you.

A little bit on mine is from stones, mostly from just sitting around for 4-5 years unused.

Out in the weather. Has a hard cover instead of a pvc cover.
Lol not even a tarp over it unfortunately.

Mine isn't a track shack. Its a superior campers camper.
It would have been ok had it not been sitting out in the weather and just had regular maintenance on it lol

I know what you mean, but i bought it knowing it needed a fair bit of work.
Rather than just doing spit repairs on the rust and sanding the whole lot, its getting blasted, primed and painted for less than what it would cost me to buy the materials.
The up side is then i get to focus on just setting it up how i want  ;D
Plus it will still end up cheaper than buying one in comparable condition to what this will be in, hence the big grins.

Hi wallon (and others) is this due to stone strike/gravel damage or for some other reason?

That would be some of it mate, however it has to do with preparation before painting. They are made in China nowdays however I don't believe it has anything to with the quality of the steel.

On mine the surface rust started to appear everywhere also. Any little chip would rust but also under the lids in the tool boxes etc. From what I experienced on mine it was very poor paint work with little or no undercoat or primers, the paint was actually flaking off in areas around the hinges etc, which looked to me to be from poor prep (not removing the grease properly etc).

The other issue with this company was that the "show unit" they use is a 2007 model and is imaculate (I had it on loan for a few months because they couldn't supply mine on time) all the stainless steel was first rate etc.

When mine was delivered all of the stainless hinges had been replace with mild steel painted with silver paint, not even gal! When I questioned this they claimed they could change the spec if they wanted but denied that they had. Lucky for me I had lots of pictures and had done screen dumps off their web site.

When I fronted them with the evidence they couldnt give me my money back fast enough for me to go away. Even though i wanted one of their campers they couldnt supply it to me in the same quality or specification as the unit they take to shows, this is the unit they use to get you to sign on the dotted line, then they supply a very different product. They are counting on the fact that you only see the show unit for 20 minutes, so they try and get away with it. The owner was a prize goose.

Jas

My one is sitting under a carport with a heavy duty tarp wrapped around,
We use it a fair bit and always have the stone guard up to protect the little outboard.
Last year before our summer holiday I sprayed the camper with lanolin oil, now I will have to take it a step further.
Evolution it would be great to have that company's number, I will get a quote from a trailer builder out of Mornington, don't mind the travel to Wodonga to get a great job done.
Last but not least I don't really want to get this thread to be against Trak Shak, the first think I will do is to not replace those Stickers and than choose a new colour :D
Keep Smiling all, I can sleep at night

It is a great design of a camper mate. Once you have addressed the issues you will have a great unit for years to come. In my opinion you will be adding value as the issues with TS are well known and people who know what to look for will find yours attractive down the trak when its time to sell.

Post some pics up when you are done.
