Rim and tyre size???????
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:12:15 PM »
Hi Swaggers,
We have a 2001 Toyota Prado.
It has 225/75/16 tyres on it and we are looking to get some new ones.
Question is will 265/??/16 fit on the car?????
ATM it has no lift but we will get a 40-50mm one done.
I think we will have to get rims and tyres.
Thanks.

A 6 inch rim is a bit young, I think your 225s would be on a 16 x 6 inch rim?

265/75/16s usually go on an 16 x 8 inch rim.

Use:

http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator

and plug in your tyre size, it gives a rim size indicator.

If you go up to that width you mite need flares too!

Get yourself a set of 16X7 90 series steel Prado GXL rims.  Came standard with 265/70/16.  75 series tyres fit like a glove, on the rim and the car.
As Mace said, you will most likely need flares.
See here.

I run these on my 2000 Hilux with 255 tyres and I had to fit flares.

And check your tyre plackard on the drivers door pillar. Keep your insurer happy.

Good point.  Victoria has adopted the new laws that allow 50mm increase on 4WD's and commercials over the largest tyres offered from factory, but I think QLD is still 15mm increase?

My 2002 Prado GXL had 265/70/16 as stock. Stayed with the same rims but upgraded the tyres.

No I don't think so. The new shape came out later in 2002 with the D4D motor.

Rodsswag, disregarding speedo accuracy for a moment, keep in mind that taller tyres compromise gearing and off-road performance. This will be especially notceable at 'step-off' in tight or hilly conditions (especially when towing) when you need every ounce of torque to move the mass. In particular, clutches really suffer.
Much better IMO to stick with the vehicle's largest available option tyre in a quality off-road, LT construction of your choice/need

Hi Fuji, you are correct with the 'new shape' in the early 2000s (a year or so after a diesel was made available in the 'old' shape) but the D4D diesel engine didn't arrive in Prado until late in 2006

X2 what Gee Tee says - we have 265/70x16 but that's for our GXL we're running D697's from local bob jane (top deal for a set of 5) and they are meant for a 16x7 wheel but we are currently on a 16x8 zero offset mag

Sounds like you have an RV ? in that case, there's room for larger tyres under the guards even without flares but the diff gearing on the RV is different to the GXL/Grande to compensate for a smaller wheel

Get back to us Rod on what model you have - RV, or GXL or Grande

Yes it is a RV model
2001 turbo diesel
In the front door it has 215/85/16 on a 16X6 rim
Or 285/70/16 on a 16X7 rim.

Or 285/70/16 on a 16X7 rim.

So that tells you all you need to know.

225/75/16's are a replacement fit for the 215/85/16's on a six inch rim.

If you want to fit the 285/70's (or the 265/75's)  you will need to replace your 6inch rims with a set of sevens, and than also probably fit flares.

Depends Rod
if you want to keep around the same gearing for easier takeoffs stay with the 225's
I've seen RV's with the GXL rims and they look good but you'll just have to see how you go with the extra wheel height

just PM me and we can set up a visit at my place and put my spare set on and go for a drive if you like

That's right, old engine new design. Got mixed up.
