Upgrading trailer AGM - Is it possible?

Hi Swaggers,

Just wondering if anyone has ever upgraded their AGM (aggregate trailer mass) before?

My GIC Extreme CT has a TARE weight of 750kg and an AGM of 1000kg. I know there is still a lot of weight to play with, however, doing a bit of calculation for weight (ie. battery setup, drifta kitchen, table and extra camping gear) I'm coming very close to the AGM.

Has anyone upgraded their trailer that they bought for a CT company so that the AGM was higher?

This is not a thread that I want to go downhill due to me having a GIC CT!! There has been plenty of that. I would just like to know if there is a possibility of upgrading the AGM whether it be through upgrading the shocks, leaf springs, tires or the like.

I'm thinking the axle would be one of the things also needing upgrading.  Sorry no other help.

Brakes would be another thing to upgrade, probably to 12 inch

The first thing i would check is the chassie thickness, how/where the drawbar mounts and see if you think it will cope with the extra strain of the upgrade. It may not need anything or it may only need small gussets etc.
Then i would look at the axle/springs and see what is required there. I have seen a full upgrade package, springs brakes hitch axle etc for under $800.
I wouldnt think it would be too difficult to upgrade to two ton?

As everything it has been built to a price, that doesnt mean its bad, just means that they have put lower strength parts on to lower the price to make it affordable. If you start at those parts then work from there it should be relatively easy to upgrade the gvm. Once done it will be pretty easy to take it to a trailer place to have a new plate fitted.

Thinking of doing the same thing with our GIC Strvy, keep us informed if you do go further. I only want to go from 750, so possibly I may only have to add brakes, that may get me too 1000.

Im not sure about Queensland but in nsw if a trailer has a gvm of greater than 750kg it needs to be fitted with brakes. Under that brakes are not required. Might be worth a call to the manufacturer.  :cheers:

Lost, I didn't contact them. I'm just wondering if it is possible to do so. I have looked at a few trailer places here in brissy and they can upgrade them. Axle is the big thing along with the shocks n springs.

Thought the other issue here is that I'll need to get the trailer re-plated and restamped for rego purposes.

I'll give GIC a call n see what they say.
