I managed to get some time to finish (well almost) the huge vice this weekend.

I welded it together and sanded it into shape.



I didnt want it to stand out too much so it painted it bright orange  ;D It has the alooy soft jaws in it in this pic, which for the most part will just stay in it.



Here is a pic with the hardened steel jaws. I put a bit of steel in it to test the mechanical advantage this thing has, and I was impressed. One hand to crush this bit of rhs.



And a final pic to show the size of it.



I am going to polish the top of the anvil part back to shiney steel and call it finished. I am confident if it is lubricated it will last a generation or two. I havent bolted it down as yet, I need some time to decide on a spot.

I also spent some time putting a sheet of ply onto a corner of my shed to help organise some of the crap I use.



The dodgy black cabinet holds my welding helmets so they dont get dirty.

Incidentally I got a new helmet from my son and his girlfriend for my 50th.



I also got a new knife and a shop vac from the other kids.

& that shed is way, way to tidy & organised :o ;D

With the vice, you said one hand only to crush that lump of metal. Is it "geared" (like a pushbike in low gear where you turn the pedal 50 times to cover a foot of road), so you needed to turn it 50 times or was it pretty quick ???

Thanks, no its not geared. The big handle gives a massive amount of leverage and the thread's pitch is 5mm....or 5 teeth per inch to be precise. Also because it used thrust bearings on the mating surfaces, you can spin the handle really easily and fast ;)
When Marcus73 comes around next Ill put his head in it and video the demonstration ;D

Finished off a "Now Playing" stand for my lounge TT set up. Had some left over rose gum from a table which has beautiful colour and natural edge.

Man, there is some talent on show in this forum, vices, cars, playing now stands, shed fitouts, sidecars, camper trailers.
I’d reckon amongst the group the only thing we can’t do is cure COVID-19, for now!

Finally got around to bending up a now playing stand, thanks to Glen

By coincidence I stopped at an opshop this morning to pick up a record to try, without seeing your woodem stand.

I've got a whipper snipper motor here, runs good as gold..... Pottsy, do ya think we should?

Spent the last few days making up a set of drawers for the troopy. I’m about half way through at this stage, and am happy with progress. All but the drawer floors is 19mm ply. Heavy but robust, and given I have pulled two 175ah agm batteries out, weighing in at 43kg each, I shouldn’t be adding too much weight over and above what was there.

Base, to be bolted to troopy floor with nutserts.


Drawers, 1500 x 430


Checking the drawers, without runners fit in base


Drawer, with 25x25 gal tube plus rails installed on skateboard bearings.

Will post finishing photos of install, hopefully tomorrow or Thursday.

Hi Trevor, I get plans from a couple of sources, Aschisworkshop.com and Bearwoods.
I tend to run my own race and change their plans to suit my needs.
