In the laundry, not the shed, but Mrs decided that she wanted a new door knob on the inside laundry door (the old one was apparently a 1980 original when the house was built so probably fair enough! ;D)

Went got one from the BGS & all good, BUT, what should have been a 5 minute job turned into 1.5 hours of muttering & mumbling because the bloody thing wouldn't fit >:(

The old hole was 10mm too narrow, the space for the latch going into the door was 10mm too short, & the striker & cover plate holes were both about 1mm too small as well >:( :'( ::) (Ever found problems like that, Mr Hairy Man ??? ;D)

All fixed in the end though, & Mrs happy so all ;D

One question though ...

This funny looking hookie bit was in the pack with the new knob, but absolutely no mention on the instructions of it, or what it's supposed to be for ???

Any ideas ???

Next time go to Paddington hardware for reproduction handles/locks, hinges vintage hardware all on display.
That hook thingy helps disassemble the handle. Specifically it pushes an internal latch that holds the circular knob onto the tube.

Without seeing the actual handle I’m guessing it’s a tool for holding something, either behind a cover plate or inside the latch. ???

Thanks gents... I was going through an old toolbox and came across these old spanners... both made in Australia...

Both were hard to drill, even with a cobalt bit, but one was ridiculously hard... nearly used a whole bottle of machine oil getting through it...

Pictures worth a thousand words or 3 in this case.
Put it in a safe place... you know where your spare keys and AAA batterys and those other things you can never find when you need them.

Its a "key" to unlock the door from the outside. Guessing its a lockable door handle?

Got me stumped then! Those same hookie things came in our door handle sets for our bathroom and toilet doors and I figured they were to unlock the
handle!

I got the same door knobs.  I assumed it was a cheap screwdriver. The bent bit fitted around the door knob.

Although looks like the real answer has already been posted.

Missed your post.
2Strokeit has covered it.
Most are either a 60mm backset or 70mm, I did once come across in a set of units in Yamba the fr9nt solid doors had a 100mm backset.
Special order was needed to replace them.
That's weird having those measurements being out, hmmm
The hookie thing is used to poke into a hole of the handle shaft to release the knob/handle, different manufacturers have different types, but they do the same job.
