did an injector pump drive shaft seal today. here's some pics
first up is to time the engine to number 1 TDC compression stroke
then pull the injector pump
then off with the drive gear
old seal removed
new seal fitted
then refit the drive gear and chuck the pump back on, next up was to set the injection timing, this is done by measuring the injection plunger stroke vs degrees of rotation of the crankshaft. so time to break out the old dial indicator and magnetic base
so with the pump refitted there's a plug in the head of the injector pump that you pull out wich gives you access to the injection plunger. dial indicator inserted in here to measure the plunger stroke
static timing specs for a 4JB1-t are 0.5mm plunger stroke at 12 degrees BTDC, i set mine to 0.55mm at 12 degrees BTDC. this advanced the timing by 2 degrees. i did this because i have the fuel rack screw and boost compensator turned up so its getting a fair bit more fuel than stock, and needed more timing to get a complete burn in the cylinders and not in the exhaust ports. also on a these engines - being a turbo diesel - the general rule of thumb is for every degree of timing advance it pulls 30 degrees out of the exhaust gas temps, high egt's is what kills these engines
very happy with the results, its heaps more responsive down low and has more of a punch in the back when it comes on boost now. also blows less soot when under load - good results
