I changed over from 5-rib ATZs to MTZs on my Patrol about 8 months ago.
MTZ's first shakedown was a run up to Valley of Lagoons via Mt Fox last year, so a mix of  good & bad dirt, bitumen etc,....
Must say I was very impressed with the level of control on the dirt, especially towing the camper.

But now with rain off & on I have been surprised by how well they do on the wet bitumen.
My old BFG AT's went sideways at the drop of a hat (didn't I get an earful when the wife did a full 180deg taking the kids to school one day  ;D ;D) .
The 5 rib ATZs were much better - more predictable, but you still had to be careful punting it around wet corners.
But I'm finding the MTZ's are noticeably better than the ATZs on wet bitumen, which is something I didn't expect.

So I'm wondering, were my ATZ's just pretty ordinary, or are the MTZ's good in the wet for a muddie? How do others find them?

The compound is so bloody hard the only benefit is long life.   :D

For this reason I deliberately run my BFGs a few PSI lower in winter. I've got 80,000 klms on them and they still have heaps of tread left. The Prado is kept in an underground car park at work and garaged at home so the UV hasn't got to them yet.

Ive never really had a problem with muddies on wet bitumen. The worst I've had were an old set of bf all terrains. I now have a set of Procomp extreme muds and they behave very well on road

Maybe the newer softer and newer compounds across many manufacturers is helping in this regard.
I know my KL71 Kumho's were by far the best wet weather tyre I've ever driven on - car or 4wd.

My Maxxis seem fine in the wet, but I dont exactly go hookin around corners like I do in my wifes car anyway

2nd set of MTZ's under the GQ wagon. had no problems at all in the wet ( had a bit of that lately). Seem to grip very well, only down side is shorter lifespan than some other brands. Overall, I'm happy with the MTZ. :cheers:

i have FC11's... not a muddy but agressive for an all terrain and they are not to bad in the wet..... :cheers:

Surprising people have had bad experiences with BFG a/t's.....

I've had nothing but good ones.......in fact, especially going on wet weather driving, I had Mickey 5 rib ATZ's and Cooper ATR's and both were rubbish..where as the BFG's have been very pretictable in the wet ( and I don't hang about either !! )

Don't forget it's hard to compare newish tyres with 3/4 worn out ones.....usually there is a lot of difference between them....even in the exact same brand..

I just wish that Mickey T would put out an MTZ or ATZ 4 rib that was legal for new vehicles, I have a nice near new set of 265/75X16 ATZ 4Rib on the MU which would be great for our trip to the kimberley on the new D.Max but because we have ESC we are not allowed to go to the new 50mm over rule. Also had a set of MT MTZs on the MU before and was very happy.

As the others have said the MTZ is a great performer because of its soft compound, just wear quick ;D which is understandable. The ATZ 5rib was never a great wet weather tyre, the 4 Rib a better option :cheers:

This is really is a problem with these old school tyres , they wear ok but wet weather control is very bad,don't belive me drive on a new age tyre then back on bfg a/t's . what is more important last for ever or grip.

Yes, It is always a compromise. .
 I'll be interested to see how long the MTZ's last. Being so grippy , I'm not expecting them to go as long as the BFGs which did last for ages.

Actually another big factor in lateral grip I found was the suspension setting.
I have tough dog adjustables - my shocks are cactus now, but in very good in their prime, i found a stiff setting (7-8) would be a lot more skatey in the wet than a more boatish setting (4-5).

I agree with Gronk as far as the BFG A/Ts go. Getting to the end of my 3rd set and I can't believe how they are hanging on in the wet (Just passed the 82,000 km mark).

I had to replace the 1st set as they were frightening when it became damp, but they were approaching 130,000 km, and could be forgiven as they had obviously become rock hard.

I also have a set of KM2s and they hang on in the wet as well.

I have the ATZ on my patrol love them off road and on road but fair Dinkum in the wet they are bloody dangerous .Wont be getting them again if ya not very cautious you will lose it very easily!!!!!
Forgot to mention I would be lucky to have done 10000klm

Just cruising MySwag again I know that some things some people like to exaggerate a little (like not letting the truth getting in the way of a good story) but I do find 130000km out of a AT tyres a little hard to believe -- I find myself very happy with about 40000Km out of a set of tyres, but I often find myself getting way less.

Gospel at 130,000 km. Most on a Hilux, but finished on a GQ. I was cursing them early because the first 10,000 km they seemed to wear very quickly, but then they just kept going.

On my third set now and have just passed the 83,000 km mark, but they won't get much further.

Mickey Ts, a tyre I will never ever spent another cent to purchase again. To discribe in one word, POO.....

Mine are ATZ 4 Rib and regret getting them, poor traction on wet bitumen and dirt, plus mine have chipped excessively bad to the point of stuffed at half wear......not happy Jan.....:-(

I just changed my Cooper ATR's at 115,000 with 3-5mm of legal tread on them. Not an exaggeration at all. Could have gone to 130,000 but they were very hard at the end and very slippery in the wet. I should know with Brissies weather lately. They were on a GQ all their life and rotated every 10,000.

If BFG's are old school.....what are some newer type spec tyres ??.....that are AT....good offroad and in the wet ??

I have mt mtz's at the moment, they are getting down to about 30% tread. They would be the worst tyres that I have ever driven on. 70kph in the wet with minimal acceleration and sideways. I try not to drive the thing in the wet anymore...
