It's happening, finally!!!
« on: February 24, 2013, 08:25:37 AM »
Just found out that I have a new job, in Port Hedland! It's a big move from Melbourne, but financially worth it, nearly double my current hourly rate for the same job and more hours so nearly triple my base weekly income. Best of all company house supplied!! Long way to drag the crew,(and camper) but looking forward to exploring the pilbara and surrounds. With 5 day shifts, then 6 nights with 3 days off at the end, a good chance to explore, fish, relax and  .. We are looking forward to the opportunities, challenges and rewards  of a new environment but sh*7ting ourselves aswell.
if i dont need 4wd, i ain't going!!!

Port Headland isnt to bad of spot.. As long as you company house isnt in South Headland you should be right..

Good Base to get out there and explore thats for sure.  I predict more than one of your breaks will be spent at Port Smith lagoon.. Awesome place about 450ks North East of Port Headland http://portsmithcaravanpark.com.au/

sometimes we just need to take the plunge.... back in 2000 we made the move to Charleville from Brisbane, company house supplied... then moved to Emerald, company house supplied and back to Brisbane in 2004.. Best 4 years and saved a heap whilst renting our homes out in Brisbane... Came back all cashed up and not a worry in the world.... except for increasing health, electricity etc etc... but love it....

Well done crew. Remember discussing other job options with you at Pineapple flat. Great that things have fallen into place. In 12 months time you will probably wonder what you were stressing about.

Just make sure the jump up in pay is refelcted in your bank saved column, otherwise the move will be fruitless.  It's easy to start living the "high roll" life when expendable income goes through the roof.

My advice after being through this is buy houses and live as you do now within your means.

Do that and in 10 years you probably wont have to work.

BTW congratz on the move to WA. :D

This is one of our main goals (aswell as a new tug ) just working out some of the logistics of driving there, such a long way and so many things to see on the way. Looks like we will take 2 weeks to get there, bit of a holiday on the way.

Congrats. I spent three years living in Port hedland back in 2002 and found it to be a great spot with family. It's got a really friendly 'small town' feel. Make sure you get involved in local activities (ie sports, etc..) to meet other families. The fishing is great even if you dont have a boat. It will take a while to get used to the temperatures though. It gets pretty hot there although you will get used to it. There's plenty of great camping places to see too. Millstream NP, Karajini NP, 80m beach. We spent 12 months living in South Hedland which isn't very pretty but not as bad as it's made out. We spent the last 2 years in Cooke Point which was beautiful. Beware the quality of housing there isn't what you might be used to in Melbourne and the cost of living is certainly higher than where you are now. Give yourself time to settle in, make contacts with other families and I think you'll fit in just fine.
