gold/treasure detectors

Hi Everyone,
My hubby and I are thinking of purchasing a treasure/gold detector to provide us with a hobby we can do together on our travels.
We have no expertise in this area and was wondering if anyone would be able to point us in the right direction. Thanks in advance. We are not planning to bbuy the cheapest available but a bit further up the range.

Its not going to be cheap...


Last time I looked (Minelab brand) into them there are 3 types,
1 that finds gold Between $1100 - $8000..
1 that finds beach fossicking $areund the $1500 mark
1 another called "adventure" detectors $upto a grand
1 that finds both, but was stupidly expensive.

Then theres the coils for the bottom of them.

I'd say hire one for the odd occasion out, if its a once/twice a year thing.

If your looking to find stuff , from cions to gold you can spend from $200 to $6000+ it really depends just what you want to pay .
All my stuff is Mine lab from a simple Exterra 305 for coins on the brach to Mine lab4000 that should fine gold if l happen to walk over it .
l do enjoy the beach early in the morning after a hot day as there is always something to find & you never know what . Treat it as a hobby & not a real money spinner , Dig everything detected as hou never know what it could be till its in your hand .Dont belive anybody that tells you there is nothing here or if you see tell tale dig sites that means that something was detected , but did they get it all  ???. You will wonder just why you are wondering around in the bush listening for a sound that tell you you have found something , then you dig up a to be rewarded with ,,,,,, Your Treasure . You do not need the greatest and latest, tho it helps if you really know how to use them.
I have an old Garrett Groundhog made in the late 70's. It won't pick up smallish stuff. Last nugget it picked up was just under 3 ounces.

My FIL has a MineLab, cost him over $6000 but paid for his house and brand new Isuzu DMax with all the goodies last year.
But he has a wealth of knowledge and spends a lot of time, 70% research and 30% detecting.

The floods 2 years ago were a boon to the goldfields, exposed some much, like all the ground was virgin again.

It is a nice way to spend some time at camp, and you never know what is under the next piece of ground.

Don't ask, he won't even tell me where he finds it  :cheers:

Thanks everyone for your posts, am seriosly considering hiring one depending on the cost, if there is not much difference between the cost of a cheapie and hiring one I might just buy it as I am sure my family and us will get the use out of it, and if we like it we then might buy a dearer one, I'll get to keep the cheapie and the better half will get the deare one

barb try evilbay for  a cheap Minelab  say a 305 or a 700 & something model . Not too expencive & if you dont like it not hard to sell . It is fun to go hunt out there  :cheers:

Speewa,do you think one those detectors that can do both is a good place to start? I thought it might be a way to try the hobby, I have o illusions, have fossicked for opals and panned for gold so am aware that it takes a while to get anything. Or can you suggest another way to go. I checked the price to hire for two weeks I think it would be better to use that money towards the purchase of a machine.

Hi, I have a minelab eureka gold, haven't found any gold, a heap of coins and relics. The best one for you's would be the minelab xterra705  . Check out australia metal detecting and relic hunting web site.  ;DMick

Funny this topic is to pop up now as we are also in the same position with regards to a detector.  I believe it would be a fun thing to do when out with the camper trailer as searching for hidden gems alwyas pops to mind when we are out and about.  Funny how many people you see on the beach in the morning during summer.

Yes not there to get rich but something to do.....but as with lots of other things there a million and one different models out there and they vary from very cheap to very expensive.........time to school up.....

Comon Speewa I know you would be a good person to advise what a good starter unit would be!!!

 Another brand worth looking at is Garrett in particular the "Garrett AT gold" but make sure you buy it from an Australian dealer as the ones bought overseas are not calibrated to Australian conditions. Jack Lange has the Fischer F5 for $675.00, I've heard there ok. His web site is www.goldhunterdetectors.com.  Mick

Also if buying new, beware of that "bargain" Minelab detector which is probably a cheap Chinese knock off!

Your a trusting soul ,,, Really if you want to get into the game then work out where you want to start $ wise ,, say 1 K
Work out which brand you want to play with . l use Minelab , your call chech Ebay /Gumtree /Etc . Then beat the feet & dig the Beep  :cheers:

We have two detectors. One cost $800 new, and is probably like a Great Wall in comparison to a Land Cruiser, and the other was a used Minelab.
We went to the Vic High Country a couple of winters ago.
The new one found more value than the Minelab.
The Minelab found a ringpull off a tinnie, whereas the new machine found a bent tent peg.
I lost interest pretty quick for that effort, but I guess I'll try again.
After a lot of computer research, and talking to others who have been at it a while, the concensus was the more you spend, the more you find. however the more you spend makes you spend more time looking, therefor you find more. It may just boil down to where you are more than what you carry.

Pick up a brand spanking new Minelab GPX 5000 this Friday to compliment the Garrett Infinium.
Bloody thing cost more than my CT and all the upgrades BUT
you can't win Bathurst in a VW.

Has anyone had any experience with the White's TDI Oz Pro, the bloke at Dunolly said they were pretty good and about $5000 cheaper than the Minelab gpx5000, but he was selling them so he may be biased  ;D
