Need help from a MySwagger in Albury/Wodonga area
« on: February 11, 2013, 10:18:04 AM »
G'day all

We're currently searching around for a used 4WD, and one has come up at a dealership in Albury (Lavington to be exact)
Being in Melbourne, its a bit difficult for me to just pop up there and have a look at it!
I'm wondering if there is anyone in the Albury/Wodonga area that would be willing and able to find the time to have a quick look at the the car for me?
All I'm after is a general condition report, maybe a quick drive, and let me know if its worth me heading up to take a look, or if its a POS and to not bother!
If someone is able to help out that would be fantastic! Let me know and I'll PM the details.

Cheers
Matt

Hi Brickiematt, I'm heading up late Friday for the camping/4WD show, just not sure how much time I will have on Sat when the dealer may actually be open.  Which dealer?  I have a couple of mates up there might be able to go and have a squizz? Scott

Scarps, thanks for the offer mate, appreciate it. The dealer shuts at midday on Saturday, so not much time to play with. I think I'll get Evo, our man on the ground up there, to have a look. Enjoy the show mate, thanks again.

Evo, thanks mate, that would be awesome if you could check it out for me. I'll PM the details shortly.

And no, no toast involved mate ;D ;D (I'm never gunna live that down! Thinking of changing my username to Toasted 8) ) There will of course be  involved to say thanks!

The salesman we just bought our 100 Series from didn't even know it has headrest DVD players! Mind you they didn't advertise half the fruit that was on the car so I don't think they knew much about it at all to be honest. Figured 4.2TD will sell itself so we don't have to worry about it.

My son was with me and wanted to hit the guy.

Same with this bloke bunyip. From what I know of these particular cars and what I can see in the pics of it, the ad doesn't do it justice, and the dealer knew very little about it! Works in my favour I spose.
I've found with used cars at a specialist dealer e.g. ford, Holden etc. the salesmen tend to know little about other cars in their lot.

That's the funny thing, I bought the 100 Series from a Toyota Dealer and they still had no clue. As you say, worked very well in my favour this time.

Just a little warning to look for when looking it over, check to see if its a flood victim!
Unfortunately I've seen a few. One buyer had brought a VW Tourareg. Car was spotless, at first. It had obviously been in for a major detail to have it present as such a neat looking car that must of been well looked after prior to the flood. At first there was a few little electric issues. I found mud in the some of the electric plugs. Looking at the chassis & under body of the car it had not been used for 4wding as there was no scratches, dings etc on such a low 4wd. I then noticed inside of the rear bar was mud marked. So the looking continued. As far as I could find the car had a tide mark inside the panels just bellow the windows. The spare tyre is in a well in the boot and it looked like they ran out of time as it was like it had been flushed with a hose and wiped down. This car is fixed now after countless hours of removing all interior items to clean properly, replaced all fluids, removed coolers to clean....I guess you get the point how extreme the mud had gotten.
The owner tracked down & contacted the previous owner thanks to the log book & she confirmed it was a flood victim and her insurance company had taken the vehicle.
The car was purchased from a dealer in Vic who said they brought it at auction (but denied knowledge of the flood damage).
And sadly there was no mention of anything on the REVS check either.

Bugger :'(
Thanks for the heads up mate, it wouldn't have occurred to me to check for flood damage, and it is a real possibility as the car came from Shepparton, parts of which were heavily flooded early last year.

If you get it then you might get to throw in a trip to the camping show as well  ;) depends what part of Shepparton it is from as it is more surrounding areas and surrounding smaller towns that were affected during the floods than in the actual town of Shepparton itself so if they tell you where the last owner was situated, I know they might not but even an area would help.

Things I check when looking at a (newish)  car.
books : service history, any major repairs, make sure any/all recalls are done, who was prior owner (fleet, private etc)

Signs of impact damage

Mechanical issues

Flood or hail damage.
(Hail is easy as a panel will never be the same, roof in particular. Flood generally by under the carpet. Behind sill panels, radiator, plugs, and under center console.)

Lol and make sure everything works as it should.
missed a few on my last car due to flying in so late, Never again lol.
feel free to add any for me to do guys.

Cheers

When my wife assesses cars for trade-ins, one of the first things she checks are the bolts/screws holding the front fenders on. Gives a very quick indication if the vehicle has had major front end repairs requiring the fenders to be repaired or replaced. The bolts/screws and fenders where they attach invariably have chipped paint.
