Buying and selling 2nd hand - where are they advertised
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:27:18 PM »
You blokes who have bought or successfully sold a 2nd hand camper. What media did you use?

I have looked at http://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/buy/camping-trailers/ and the old http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Automotive/Caravans/Camper-Trailer/Locations/I

anywhere that stands out as 'the place to be'

Please, just the general sales media, don't tell me how you were lucky coz sold it to your mate's cousin who you met at a swingers party  ;D

I only had 1 bid. I had something like 20 people watching it during the process.
I think selling these days is a bit more about getting people to commit to a purchase, thats what I tell vendors who want to sell property.

So I went by mine own rule and it worked.

But I did feed the greed. So I gave a reason for selling and then spec'd everything on the camper, not embellishing but making it sound really really good, and that I was keen to sell and see it go to a good home and to people who use it.

You have to be sensible with your pricing make the reserve realistic in comparison to whats on the market and entice people to bid.

It may cost you literally a couple of dollars to list in comparison to gumtree etc but I reckon it gets heaps more active buyers.

Cheers Nomad.

I sold my last one on campertrailers.org, but I reckon here would be a very similar audience
Are you selling because you have woken up about independent suspension and now want to improve your life, if so my Aussie swag might be for sale shortly and comes complete with two dozen eggs  ;D

I think your trying to sell at a **** time of year..  Leading into Xmas and through to Jan, people are broke.

It's probably not the item, or the price (but there have been this exact same thread about 4 times asking why **** isn't selling in recent weeks) but the majority of people will hit e-bay first which gives them a false sense of reality.

There they see a new trailer for $2500 and go that's my starting point... Then go to a caravan camping show and die of shock. Then look at used trailers for $10k + and can't understand the difference, most don't care, many can't afford which is not their fault - we all have limits.

Its like when you see new members with a wish list of the top of the line KK or ASwag and want similar for $5k.

IMHO, for the price you have on it, I'd suggest spend the weekend washing and polishing the **** out of it all, and taking some new photos with good lighting inside, out under and over.
Nice and shiny with nice tight canvas like in a showroom will always look better

Theres another trailer on here for $50,000 + with 3 photos of the outside and a distant shot if it setup camping on a beach.. Doesn't look appealing to me.

Disregarding comments made by all around me at work exposing Gumtree as a huge scam market, that's where I found my Trackabout and was just in the next suburb. I had been looking all around on Trading Post, ebay, local papers etc etc. I thought well why not try Gumtree and there it was.
I was looking at one on campertrailers.org but he wanted too much for it and would not move. I beleive it was still there about 12 months later. Wasn't a Trackie though.
I think the more exposure it gets the more chance you have of selling it. Just got to have the right person at the right time at the right place willing to pay the right amount. Sounds easy when you say it quick.

Good luck with the sale.

I agree.. I find it disturbing and funny that some people have different prices in different locations they are selling things.
$10k on one forum $11 on another and $7k on ebay

I found mine on eBay, but didn't buy it there as I won't spend those sort of $ without getting it checked out first. The CT had been put on for 7 days so I contacted the seller and got his phone number. Once the auction ended I rang and offered his starting figure. Yes he was hoping for more, but in the long run I also saved him eBay fees. This also gave me the opportunity to have it checked over by a fellow Swag member. I think the best thing with eBay is the exposure it gives. Just make sure your starting price is the lowest you are willing to take.

Hey Joff,

Good to hear you're still alive mate!

isnt gumtree a WA thing. I go take a look

Father-in-law bought a bulbar for his car from Gumtree - he saw the ad and range the guy the next day. After a week of ringing around he discovered that he could not buy the brackets for it. Relisted it on Gumtree for the same money he spent, and it sold the next day to a fellow who was terribly excited to get it. You see, he's had these bulbar brackets in his shed for ages...

True story. That's in sunny Cairns, and the bulbar was for an older-model Ford Courier. About as small a market as you could get, yet two sales of the same item within a week, with it being listed for less than a day each time.

tl;dr - give GumTree a go. I was sceptical, but...

I think good, accurate photos go a long way to making potential buyers at ease. Reading your ad, I'm seeing nice pretty photos. But in reading your description "Photos are old ones, trailer is not new, thousands of kms, some red dirt staining, wear marks", I'm starting to think "uh-oh - it's not going to look anything like these photos, sounds like it's had a really hard life, etc...".

From what I know of you I'm confident that you're being far more honest than you need to be, and that everything is actually in quite good condition, you're just not wanting to overpromise and have people disappointed. But Random Joe will be coming from a more cynical position. So I'd suggest trying to find the time to set it up as-is somewhere nice (park, etc, with nothing else around it), and take some accurate up-to-date photos to show the honest condition. I think that would go a long way to making people more comfortable. You're trying to make it as easy as possible for someone to choose your product over the opposition's.

The photos of it behind the cruiser and set up in the bush are gold - you're selling "the dream" as much as you are the camper. And by including them you're showing that you're not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

Just my unsolicited $0.02 - keep in mind it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Cheers,
Matto :)

We found our Cub on Gumtree. First time I had ever used it and as a large sum of money changed hands, I was very, very wary, especially as the seller was selling 2 campers at the same time. However, the guy turned out to be genuine, and all is good. We have a practically new camper at $9k below the RRP for brand new kit.
