Storage Challenge
« on: February 06, 2013, 10:47:52 AM »
Here is the dilemma,

We a going to attempt to take six people (5 adults & 1 Child) camping and only one car, the landcruiser. Seating is not an issue but anyone who owns a landcrusier no whe the back seats are down there is virtually no boot. So we need to work out where to but all the extra bags, chairs, tents, airbeds etc. Luckilly there is plenty of storage in the Camper for all the other bits and pieces. Eg food)

We have a Rhino roof pack for the gullwing which should fit the table and most of the chairs on the KK. My biggest concern is the Luggage. Have been looking around and found that Southern Cross Canvas will custom make us a 1200x700x250mm (expandable to 450mm) roof bag that will fit perfectly on the KK at the back between the support rails of the camper floor.

Has anyone had any experience with Southern Cross's canvas or campers. http://www.southerncrosscanvas.com.au/accessories/roof-top-bags/ they insure me that if prepared properly we should have no issues with water getting in. Do not want a PVC or Vunyl one as they make everthing inside sweat.

Or if you have any other suggestions please feel free to let me know.

You will struggle to find a better company than them.

having said that, they are expensive, and any canvas place will make you a canvas bag.

They do? Your PVC/Vinyl must be different to mine then. I've used a PVC one (Bushranger) for years with no condensation problems.
Cheers, John.

I found out that from a company who custom makes both PVC/Vinyl and Canvas, they gave me the pro's on both. One for the PVC was sweating. I told them that other than big trips when they will use them for extra storage, we will use them to transport wet canvas and tents when we have to pack up in the rain (like we did on the australia day weekend). They felt we were probably better of with canvas.

I would prefer to go with someone I can trust. Strong believer in you get what you pay for. They quoted $370 including freight which I thought for something you intend to use for many years to come that wasn't bad value.

How long are you going away for?

You can probably rent another 4wd for tree or four days for that price...........and drive it like you stole it

LB,

We picked up a brand spanking new Southern Cross roof top bag off ebay - seller hadn't used it and wanted it gone. $100 which ended up including delivery as he was passing through town to the snow fields  ;D

As soon as I got it I threw it in the bath full of water and soaked it for a few hours. Then, out of the bath, out of the bathroom through the window  ;D as it is as waterproof from the inside as the outside!

It's been in some fairly rough weather - never leaked and pretty dustproof too.

I'm a happy kamper!  ;D
