Stone Guards
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:45:21 AM »
Morning All!!

Does anyone have any alternative ideas to the shadecloth stone guards as fitted to camper trailers? Mine does not have one, but will probably need one in the future, just wondering if there are any better ideas as they are not overly attractive!!

If its the only way to go, any ideas where I can purchase ready made, or get custom made ones done?

Thanks!

Dont know if its a bad move or not in regards to it being damaged and then having to replace ,where as the others you still have frame and only replace the cloth section.Someone on here who may have one could clarify how effective these types are for deflecting stones back towards the road and how the material holds up against abuse

Stone stompers get a good wrap and also protect the rear window. I didn't go that way myself, but plenty have, the manufacturer is a member here. The other thing to address is stones going under the van/camper, on my van the damage under the van from bouncing stones did more damage than front on.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

Another vote for Stonestomper.

Protects the drawbar, front of the camper, and back of the car.

They are  very high quality product!

This is the one I made for the front of mine, 25mm x 25mm x 1.6mm frame bolted to 40mm x40mm x3mm uprights welded to 50mm x 100mm x 6mm angle attached to the drawbar with U bolts doubles as a bullbar :)

Hi, did 17000 klms last year including the Gibb plus Cape Leveque Rd with a Jayco Outback Eagle towed with a Santa Fe. Had a Stone Stomper and no damage to either tow vehicle or camper. Very well made bit of gear and worth every cent.
Cheers

i had a stomper and it does a great job as it stops the rebound to the back of the car, as well as protecting the van, although underside, behind drawbar still gets nailed. Problem with some of those that aint full width, rebound is still happening.

I like the stone stomper, and if it was on the market when I wanted a stone guard I definately would gave got one.

But it wasnt, so I got this instead. It's done about 20,000k without a drama, and it's done a bloody good job.
