Quote
The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Parks Victoria have closed a number of national parks and state forests around Mount Feathertop and Mount Beauty in the north east of Victoria because of a fire burning in the area.

DSE Agency Commander David Nugent said for the safety of the public the parks have been closed until further notice.

“People who had planned to visit these affected areas over the Australia Day long weekend will need to rearrange their travel plans

“The fire is burning four kilometres north east of Harrietville and with hot, dry and windy conditions this week, is expected to continue to burn for a while.”

The state forests and parks closed are:

·        Falls Creek State Forest
·        Hotham Heights State Forest
·        Bogong State Forest
·        Tawonga South State Forest
·        Smoko State Forest
·        Freeburgh State Forest
·        Germantown State Forest
·        Harrietville State Forest
·        Bright State Forest
·        Wandiligong State Forest
·        The Alpine National Park is closed east of Harrietville, west of the Kiewa River West Branch, and to the north west of Mount Feathertop
·        Mount Feathertop and its approaches are closed
·        In addition, the southern part of the Alpine National Park (Wonangatta – Moroka) section remains closed due to the Aberfeldy fire.

yep we changed our plans to camp up the Buckland Valley and daytrip to Blue Rag Range,Crooked river, Pioneer Race course etc. Given the expected change coming through this Friday anything could happen with more lightning strikes. We had  a good light show the other night around here in Wodonga. Even the gum trees are drying out making things even worse! Luckily we have access to private property to sit on and avoid the crowds.

For anyone in Victoria or planning a trip into Vic, I can highly recommend you 'liking' the CFA facebook page.  If you have fb on your smartphone, you get instant fire warning info and constant updates for any fire events in Vic.

We got kicked out of a National park a couple of weeks ago on the South coast due to fire risk. The authoritys are not taking any chances since the big Vic fires so we had better get used to it.
I knew the risk of camping in a Nat Park during hot and dry conditions but as we were camped by the beach there was an escape route if the fires had of come through. Anyway no choice as the ranger came and told us to leave immediately. I was a bit upset when all the parks were still closed the following day even after a Southerly had come through and it was only 18c with drizzle. Rangers answer was because the Fire 30km away was declared a section 44 we can't open any of the Parks up!
Like a fellow camper said, years ago without all the media coverage, smartphones internet etc it would have just been a hot day!
The local police were even going around to the commercial caravan parks and warning them of a 'potential' fire risk.

An app is different to the Facebook page. I would recommend the Facebook page for up to date info as people are adding their own first hand info too.

Bruce maybe you will have to move into the 21st century and join :D

l really got no problem closing the parks in these conditions . As responsible users of the bush we can be relied on to do the right thing but the Bogan element  :o How many times have you been in the bush & some 1/2 wit stuffes it up . lf a fire ripped through a camp site just where do you go .......... Mostly up in smoke . The ranger has got safer things to do than go around the camps telling people to scoot . If/When it happens trying to get it contained is the more senseable thing to do , IMHO
You can go your own way . Treg Up & Make Dust

Yup.. 100% agree..

In the last round of big fires as the story went in the paper, there were a few families with young kids and a baby that didn't heed the warning, and went out for the day and they got cut off.

A couple of rangers with a cruiser ute with a pissy slip on tank told the families to go into the river then put themselves between the families and the fire.
Saved the lot of them.
NOBODY should have to risk their lives like that to save morons from themselves.
