thumper battery question
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:31:17 PM »
Folks, well my question is 1/2 related to a thumper battery for my wedding (long story short, but basically our MC requires a power source for her audio system where setup outside).

Now running a generator for my wedding isn't on due to the obvious reasons, and i thought what better excuse to buy a thumper battery to run her audio/microphone system (with an invertor).

The other half has approved, and now i need to get cracking as need to purchase by the end of the week.

Before I go out and lash out on one, is there some obvious things i should consider - or alternatives?

Yeah........I thin given the size of the inverter I think you going to need you will have to wire that direct to a battery with appropriate fuse or cb, so a thumper may not be worth the effort. Battery, battery box inverter and fuse/cb with appropriate wiring may be better......or maybe hire something from an audio place surely they have portable stuff for that purpose.

HAve a great wedding.

If the inverter has alligator clips could you not connect them to the thumper jumper leads? Used to do this with my air compressor with no problems.

I have posted several times about how much cheaper it is to source a deep cycle battery, battery box and whatever else, than it is to buy a "thumper" setup.

For your scenario this could work, but I'm not sure how long it would offer you.

You could run a Honda genset with a long lead, you wouldn't hear it.

yep, we use a Honda 20ei ei o gennie with a 25 metre lead and you can only hear it if the i boil the jug. (the electric one)

Not that piece of crap 12 volt Shitheap i bought, stupid jug.

If you live handy to someone, perhaps you could borrow one? (a gennie, not jug)

Whereaboutsareyou?

I would have thought a Honda gennie and a long lead. You wouldn't hear it. Well I wouldn't anyway. Hearing is shot as it is.

Look at the bright side, if the mic all of a sudden stops working, you know someone has knocked off the gennie.

Whats so special about these Thumper battery packs?
My mates obsessed with getting one.
$900 for a 105ah pack!
Told him to go get an Ark battery box for $100 and fit a $250 100ah AGM battery, but he won't hear of it...

We have one and had it set p in case. Never thought to use it in place of a battery. Spent lot of time in the shed and have used it to start every one else car - hmmmmm.

I think that they are ready to go so to speak, jumper leads attached and all that means people have them as piece of mind. I think they forget they have to stay on a charger and the sh1t ones won't turn the truck over for long should yo need it.

My Bushranger (There Big One) will run my 50 waeco in the work van for 6 hours and that is about that. The issue I have with mine is the time it takes to recharge them. Mine is only a 4 amph re-charge rate

I have a thumper that sits in the back charging by the anderson plug, so it is charged all the time, the thing with a deep cycle is does it have enough CCA to start the diesel, mine has got 4wds started on a couple of occasions, not to mention running the fridge etc.
I love mine, and it was also my wifes idea to get it

All the best

The smaller ones I can sort of see value in.  I've got a jump starter pack with a 38ah battery that I picked up on ebay years ago for $100, same ones are sold at Super Cheap for $200.  Runs my fridge for about a dayish and can jump start 6cyl diesels and BB chevs easy, plus is great for portable camp lighting.  Fitted an Anderson plug to charge in the back of the ute and use an old 4amp Arlec charger at home.  The original chinese battery inside it (same size is used in wheelchairs) lasted 3 years and was replaced with a Panasonic one for $190.

So 3-$400 for a small one seems okay, but for $900 I could get a 100ah AGM, battery box, 15amp charger, 80 watt portable solar kit, dual battery kit and a bit of change for a set of jumper leads.

Just hook up a inverter to a anderson plug and your away.  Best try and use a pure sine wave inverter ( use the money you save by not buying a thumper ) as the modified sinewave ones seem to put a lot of static into audio gear.  I tyried mine on one of those guitar amps using a modified inverter and it was a bit staticty. Not what you want when saying your vows.

While we are showing these things heres mine.......200aH.
2 andersen plugs, 4 12volt plugs and a merrit plug.

Cost excluding batteries was probably around $200 also.

Theres a few threads on these things.

Cheers Nomad.

Here's my portable dual battery pack that I originally made for the back of my Hilux.

120ah AGM
XLarge Battery Box
2x 50amp Anderson Plugs
50amp Circuit Breaker
2x Cigarette Sockets

I keep meaning to fit a volt meter, but instead use an old $8 multimeter with a cigarette plug and lead soldered into the probe holes.

I've still got a 175amp Anderson plug setup for jumper leads that I made up.  Never fitted it as I couldn't bring myself to chop up my good jumper leads.

The whole setup including the battery is now over 7 years old and still works a treat.
