What a Dingo can do to a dog.
« on: December 30, 2012, 02:53:33 PM »
We are currently looking after a Beagle.  Thought he was enjoying the freedom of our acreage after living a sedate life in Brisbane.  Until last Saturday when he had an encounter with a Dingo.  Our Border Collie barks at them but does not go after them.  The vet told us Beagles will and once their hunting instincts set in it is very hard to call them back.  So Saturday morning we heard him off in the distance barking and then yelping and we tried to call him back without luck.  Then we heard a couple of loud screaming type of yelps and silence.  We went searching on our tractor and on foot but could not find him.  We thought he must be dead and wondered how we would be able to tell his family. We came back to our house and saw blood on our deck and found him laying in our dog’s pen, wounded, bleeding and absolutely exhausted.  Rushed him off to the vet where he spent the weekend and now he is recovered back at our place. Poor little fella, must have been scary for him and he must have put up a fight.  The vet said it was typical dingo wounds.  A lot of puncture wounds as dingos will start at the rump and work their way up to try and puncture a lung. We are now keeping a close eye on him and chained up at night and keeping him close to our house in the day.  His family are in India and not due back for another 4 weeks.  We will tell them the story when they get back. With the happy ending  :)    kevin

Charlie

The main wounds. There were also a couple around the neck area.

Poor Charlie.  Now, do you think he'll learn from this?  I guess he's lucky it wasn't a feral dog pack ... there would be no Charlie to find.  Reckon this is why we keep a very close eye on our pups when camping and ensure they are confined at night although I'm not sure how Velcro will stand up to a dog really wanting to get in or out.  At least ours believe they are in regardless once that zipper goes down.

I asked a bloke once if his Dingoes would be alright around my kids , his response was a rather di-interested "who knows".....my response of "well I'll do you a deal , keep your Dingoes away from my kids and I'll keep my tyre lever away from your Dingoes" ......ruined what could have been a beautiful friendship...

Had a friend with a dingo, shyest dog I ever saw. Couldn't even stand you looking at it, it would back away. But he would walk it and it would go straight after the two Alsatians in the service station yard and take them both on and win, it was fearless against other dogs .
Here for a good time, not a long time!

They're no good as pets; can't trust them and they're not social so why would you bother?

I know folks who bought a part dingo pup off a bloke up near Maleny in the Glasshouse Mountains. Ate all their chooks and walked 30km back to the bloke who sold it.

Lucky that Charlie has someone looking after him that got him to the vet when he needed it!

We have 2 beagles. Youngest is 10 and she'll chase anything. Woke up to her barking yesterday so let her out thinking it was just the usual weak bladder call, only to have her run off after a medium size roo I didn't see nearby. Thought I was about to have a very long walk/run to go and get her. Thankfully she gave up the chase pretty quick.

He is back to his old self now.  The wounds are healing. Unfortunately that means I have to keep him tied up more.  He just wants to go and play and swim in our dam. Our dog just doesn't understand.  He tried to play with him yesterday, until he grabbed him around the neck.  Must still be a bit sore and maybe brought back bad memories as Charlie gave a big yelp!
Can’t wait until his family are back, it is just too much of a worry watching him.
We were very impressed with the vet and staff.  They really looked after him.  The cost was not too bad.  They shaved around the wounds and cleaned them, had him on a drip and looked after him for two nights and gave us two different medications to give him for a while.  The bill was $315.  We thought it would be a lot more.

I would not part with my Dingo for the world. She has saved me a few times due to undesirable visitors and made people think twice because she is a cheeky dog. But the people/children that can be trusted she has no problem with but should we have to go anywhere public she wears her muzzle just incase she is provoked and its my piece of mind that I will not loose her over someones elses stupidity.

i would not recommend them to just anyone but due to my lifestyle at the time and the easy accsess to dingo's she has suited me well and still does.

Any dog threatened will defend itself its a shame that Beagle got hurt from following its own natural instinct.

Cheers Savio

Dunno, I recon that's a pretty smart dog. He expressed his opinion of his new owners   >:D and then showed how faithfull he was. :cup:  The bloke that sold him would make a fortune too  ;D
