What Diet For Dexter

As you are aware we have a new memeber to the family 5 week old Dexter .What are your experiences with a pups diet ?.Are there any good dry food formulas etc .I was going to get the Hills Science Diet small dry biscuits .Supposed to handle all a growing pups nutritional needs up till 1 yr old without giving him wet food.Any ideas would be appreciated.

Don't know anything about those biccy's, but I'd be getting pretty sick of the same thing for every meal, after a few days. I think you should ask your vet

Yucky this may sound, but check the pups turd.

If it is solid nuggets then his diet is pretty good. If it's Mr Whippy consistancy, probably too much wet food.

If his eyes cross while doing the business, it's probably too dry.

Hills, Advance or any of the other high quality dry dog food with the occasional big bone to knaw around to get some meat.

Wet food is not food its canned crap.

Our border collie has one cup of advanced dog food per day with the occasional bone/leftovers.  We live rural and the dog would run about five k's a day around the property keeping the trucks and motorbikes at bay.  any more than 1 cup and she starts to get fat.  Now that is some pretty nutritious stuff.

Dogs dont care what they get fed.  In the wild they supplement their diets with animal faeces and I haven't heard one complain once.

My Dingo eats human faeces! Pity its at most road side camps. I can certainly complain

Agree with others buy a quality dry food esp whilst the pup is developing , look at the specs on the food in the table on the back of the packet, this will list the nutritional values.

Some are better than others and some brands are suited to different breeds better , like higher carbs or higher proteins etc.

My dog now 7 is on a cheaper brand food as he is no  longer developing , but he ate hills science diet as a puppy ,

True the comment of how dogs eat , the food is designed with nutrition in  mind as they care little for variety.imho .

Congrats on the new arrival and hopefully he's not a stone cold killer ...LOL

My advise is not to let that sweet innocent adorable face charm you too much so you are tempted to supplement it's feeding with too much from each family members plate.  When Dexter starts eating your furniture and shoes ... tempt it with nice marrow bones.  As for what you are feeding it with ... my local produce shop has one called FOLD ... Fat Old Lazy Dog food ... it's Australian made, a bit lower in fat content (although your pup may like it a bit higher) and won't break the bank.  Instead of canned food (CRAP ... Can't Retain And Poo's) try making your own nutritious home mix.  I use rice, left over veg (stalks, peelings, ends etc) mixed with a touch of garlic (for fleas - but don't overdo this) cooked together and mixed with what ever fresh meat doesn't get used at home (fatty bits, gristle etc), and whatever fresh offal you like (liver, heart, kidney, chicken offal etc).  To make it "wet" add water before serving with dry food.  I've had Zero Complaints.     I store mine in containers in the freezer (eg chinese takeaway) and remove to thaw day before required.  My cats don't mind this mix either.

P.S.  Always check with Your Vet before feeding home made foods ... some of them are fussy (the vets not the dogs).

Eukanuba puppy formula. Expensive, but its expensive because its the best.

Our dog is given Purina Pro Plan. He is a Police dog in training so his diet has to be spot on. He has 4 cups a day, still a puppy. Occasional chicken neck and some doggie bikkies.

If his eyes bulge right out, the veins in his forehead look like fuel lines and he yelps during a crap, he's swallowed a tennis ball.

I feed our staffys a mixture of shredded vegetable and apple mixed with either chicken or kangaroo mince

I'm not a fan of dried food on a regular basis

I have used plenty of dog foods over the years expensive and cheap ones.  Dizzy at the moment is on Big W brand puppy woof bix and she is putting on weight great I also did some vegies carrot corn beans and rice in one and carrot corn beans potato and pasta in the other not much potato or pasta/rice just to absorb the water hit it with the stick blender and froze it in zip lock bags.  She has either dry or dry and weet bix for breakfast she has a good coat and good body size, as she was a rescue pup was still putting on weight when we got her from the foster Mum.  Havent fed can food for about 3 years as the vet said it can cause more tartar build up on their teeth.  Milli (older dog) was on adult dog pro but just changing her over now to the woof bix light and mature range so will see how she goes on that.  If his coat is healthy and his weight is good you are probably on the right track.  I know there are more expensive (better?) brands out there but this works for us

Hey Bushbandit, what a Great little fella he is, i'm sure your family will get many years of love and enjoyment from Dexter. Re feeding, stay away from canned crap if possible and the occassional dog roll is ok, but check the contacts for ingredients first. Chicken necks are great when you can get them and there are many dried foods available out there although many of them are quite expensive. These are always handy for special treats when training him and when travelling with him. Have a chat to your Vet also for his recommendations although they will usually recommend the brand that they sell. Nothing wrong with that though.

We switched to Hills Science Diet when they were about 7 ($$$) and have now (recently) switched again to supercoat dry food (again due to $$$). Our two boys have only ever had a diet of dry food and table scraps if they're lucky.
