Online Selling, - Beware
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:39:10 PM »
I thought I tell fellow swaggers this story, just passed on from my sister.

She lives in an inner city suburb, unassuming residence in a nice inner Melbourne NE suburb near the Yarra.

She and my BIL returned today  from a week away to find their home trashed.  Usual camera gear and some PC gear taken.  What was unusual was every small item of "ephemera" of historical nature had been pinched.
The whole house had been turned upside down, cupboards and boxes emptied and gone through, top to bottom.   The perps must have been in the house for several hours. Bookcases trashed, drawers turned upside down and gone thru. She reckons it will take her a week to tidy up the place.

Every blind in the house had been pulled down, blankets had been placed over gaps between drapes and window frames,  to prevent light showing outside, or anyone else looking in.

Taken was every item of "ephemera". antique or otherwise that she and her husband had collected in their 40 years or marriage, jewelery, small antiquities from the 40's and 50's, books of any value, in fact anything that you mite think could be sold in a good second hand shop that could be readily transported had been removed.  No items of furniture were removed.

The local Police reckoned that it was the most unusual case they have seen, no prints (gloves worn) no disturbance noticed by neighbors (at night?).

The only thing my sister can think that may have laid them open to this theft is that over the past 6 months they have been selling of small items of a historical or antique nature that may have identified them as a possible target, small antiques, antiqitities and old books that they no longer required.

Her tips now are:

Dont let anyone strange come into you house to view items, have them at the entrance door or nearby. If they are large, put them in the shed out the back if possible.
Record  their vehicle  number plate before they leave.

It makes you think how many other thefts may have been planned this way.

I have heard many ways thieves work.

One is they pretend they break down near you place ask for help and then return with a gift to go to a show etc and then when your out they break in.

Another is turn your water meter off and come back in a day or so and if its still off they break in.

Sorry to hear that. My missus didn't like unknown people coming to our house when I was selling the camper. I had a she'll be right attitude, maybe I need to be a little more careful...

I think we have all been in those shoes before.

But chances are it was someone who was watching them for months, bought 1 item, got the addy, and there ya go.. But if they were on holidays, how did the thief know, unless it was someone who bought Shit recently and they told them
"you need to pickup by Friday as we are leaving the house empty for you to spend days inside while we are in Vahine Island on holidays"...

But may have been the jealous neighbour...

yep, thats pretty right.

Stuff they had collected for many years, original  greeting cards, posters, photographs,  and the like, but now 50 or 60 years old and irreplaceable.  Whoever took the stuff knows their sh&t.  Thats whats so strange.  I mean, a $1.00 postcard now is worth $10 down the track, if you know your area of expertise.

They have lived at the same address since 1973 and have never felt so open to theft.

The latest trick is the open house by the real estate agents. You and family go out and agents let people in to look. Agents lock house and crooks wait for agents to leave and break in before you get home. So BEWARE! Also be mindful of withdrawing money from ATM. And hang on to your bags of pressie s as you walk out of stores. Especially shops like JB etc.
Merry Christmas.

When I sell stuff on flea bay, the only things that get picked up from my house are items large enough to NOT fit in the back of the Prado.
Everything else is picked up from me at work. And those large items, get moved to the garage and when the buyers come, they hardly get a chance to walk in. I meet them out front on the driveway and my boys help move the items and pack them in the car/trailer... Touch wood, never been done over, but I know folks who have and it is a NASTY feeling.

And if you get done once, damn good chance the scum will be back in six months to get the new stuff replaced on insurance.

Home security is the same as CT security, you won't stop the scum from stealing it if they really want to.  You just have to make yours less attractive to steal than your neighbours.

We are very aware when conducting open homes and I can say in our office doing over 9000 open homes in 10 years we have never had a theft reported. Always make sure any valuables are taken or out of sight.

We were broken in once when a thief came in through the back door while we were asleep and the ex spooked him. Not a nice feeling. Slept for months with a metal bar near my bed.

We got rolled at work last night, building sites over Xmas a prime target. The alarm scared them off and we got some good CCTV footage. Only lost a bucket of plumbing fittings, still over 1k's worth.

If you camp in caravan parks don't write your home address on the register when you sign in.

Crooks will go to reception with an enquiry. They can usually see the registration book & memorise a few addresses.

They then go & roll your house. If your at a caravan park, it's a fair bet that your house is empty.

This would only really be a problem if you holiday fairly local to your home. Can't imagine crooks driving a few hundred k for a possible empty home (plenty of people have house sitters these days, especially if they have pets or plants that need watering regularly). More likely to thieve from the caravan park. Wife is a cop and that's her input.

Mate. I'm speaking from personal experience. When a crook got busted a few years back the cops found a staggering amount of stolen property. The crook gave it all up. It's was a highly organized gig whereby 2 or 3 car loads would travel from Melbourne to holiday destinations along the Vic coast. They would go to as many van parks as they could to glean addresses. Then back to Melbourne where teams would go & roll the houses.

In the 70's we knocked off a few blokes that specialized in burgs in the more affluent areas.
They targeted weddings and funerals, and were very successful.

Sad isn't it.........!

Pretty sickening and disgusting.   Nothing is sacred anymore. Funerals, thats just the worst kind.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Wow, organisation on that level is in reality not very common in Aus, despite what people may think. The vast majority of criminals are not very bright and their main focus is thieving cash or anything they can offload for cash to enable their next drug purchase. As for the caravan park crusaders, you would think there would be easier ways to find empty homes without the travelling. But as I said, these crims ain't too bright so maybe I should not be so surprised.
