The Colorado will pull it easy as the calculations to tow a fith wheeler is different than towing a normal van. As the weight is over the rear axle instead of at the tow hitch, it makes it easier to tow. I have a fith wheeler that I tow with a D-Max and I find it easier to tow than the camper that I tow as the weight of the camper is on the ball and though the camper is a lot lighter, the back of the ute sags more than with the larger/heavier 5th wheeler on it. I average around 15.5 ltrs/100km with the 5th and around 14ltrs/100km with the camper.
I'm sure you know your stuff, but the basics don't change. Irregardless of the weight behind, the Colorado in my original post has a GVM of 2900 kg against a bare weight of 1800kg. So, 1100kg payload?
The spree has a payload pressure of 700kg bare (I checked their website), plus the 100kg weight of the turntable? This means the Colorado can carry another 300 kg? Add fuel and two passengers? 200kg gone, or in our case, 230!
So as I see it it has another 70 - 100kg payload available, for any additional things like water, food, other travelling stuff, which can be either loaded into the 5th wheeler or put into the tug? An extra 500kg or so of stuff in the spree will convert to a proportional amount of payload weight depending on load location. It will also add to the spree laden weight, pushing it to say 3800 kg. So is that Colorado legal? Just, at its maximum capability with no margin for error, and being steered by a grey nomad who may or may not have any experience in towing heavy combinations.
It means you can't have a bulbar and winch, or even carry the family dog and a six pack in the cabin!
Yep, it's been done to death in other GVM threads, some people don't give a rats if they are over GVM
, some know they are overloaded and accept it, other a have NFI!
Yep, much safer than towing a 3000kg van with a twin can, agree with that.
But IMO it is still not the most appropriate vehicle for the job. People just taking the lowest $$$$ way out they can, not that it's cheap combination anyway.....
Hope yours gives you much trouble free motoring and travelling, where are some pics?
