Where to buy solar blanket for my campers roof?
« on: November 25, 2012, 10:45:55 PM »
OK so I was going to buy a solar blanket from a local camper trailer mob that has sold out before they arrived even after I had reserved one but I'm moving on. What I would like to know is where to buy from and how much? The one I missed out on was $300 and have heard some other ridiculous prices nearing $700 so they wont be looked at.

Hey Woodsie,

Is it just a matter of ringing and asking for a quote and is the blanket the bubble wrap type?

cheers

We got one from Camprite (for our Camprite) and they are fantastic. The difference in temperature inside the camper is amazing!

Do these blankets make much noise in windy conditions?

No, no more than the awning blowing in windy conditions. They have quite a few tie down ropes to keep it secure. We use ours a lot. We even use it in Winter, I think it keeps the camper a bit warmer and we haven't had any problems with condensation!

If you want to save a bit, do what we did, get a silver tarp from a hardware. We already had spare poles and ropes, cost about $40.  They do makes a big difference.

Thanks. I thought that might have been the case.
It's the condensation, more than the heat, that I'm trying to sort. We're rarely inside the camper during the day......
Looks like a winner.

Thanks Kev, but these custom solar blankets look pretty reasonably priced, and I'm after something that I can leave on the camper.....no poles...... :cup:

I've found poly tarps (of any colour) to be very noisy.....

Yes, see where you are coming from.  We have not found a problem with noise, but we do need poles and have to remove the tarp and fold it up when we pack up.   Kevin

We have a tropical roof over the sleeping area....but for our awning we decided to make our own solar blanket...

bought some roofing insulation (its silver on one side, silvery orange on the other, and has a orange sponge material in between..a couple of mm thick).
We then put holes in it that lined up with our awning pole holes....Used some cloth tape to re-inforce around the holes...
Then bought some plastic clamps from BCF that allow you to clamp the insulation to the edge of the awning...if it looks like it will get windy, I just run a couple of ropes over the top of the awning from side to side to stop it form flapping. The clamps stop it from taking off.

It works a treat and cost very little.

Solar blanket is a reflective air cell blanket that lays directly on the roof...........tropical roof is another layer of canvas with an air gap (Kimberley, AORC, etc.......)

Lost,

I call my tropical roof, the item that has flexi poles that are curved and keep it away from the canvas, and is part of the camper itself..ie..folds up with it.

I call my tropical blanket something that sits on the canvas itself.

You could be right that they are pretty much the same thing.

Well rang up Camprite today and spoke to someone who wasn't really interested in doing anything until after christmas so rang up another canvas sewer who also couldn't do anything until after xmas and for 3 x the price - whatever!

So hoping someone knows of another dealer or company as I need this before xmas.

cheers

When we were up the Cape this year there was a guy at Bramwell Station that made them. He also had fishing tackle etc. he is Internet based and makes them in South Aus.

He was the father of the guy running the camp ground. Sorry cant remember the name of his business.

We had a good look at the solar blanket on his camper. Looked to fit very well.

I will keep looking for his website and post it if I can find it.
