Fraser Island camp ground ??
« on: November 24, 2012, 11:07:41 PM »
OK I'm sure this has been asked many a time. But now its my turn.
It's been about 10years since I've been back to Fraser (bad planning on my part I loved the joint)
Now I have kids (13 and 4) and by the time I can get to go in March 2013 I will have a three week old as well, so I am thinking of camping ground that is fenced for my piece of mind. Now when I used to go up I would camp where I liked, and from what I gather I have these choice's. Dundubara, Central Station. Is there others? What do you think the best would be. Are they just sand site's or do some have a bit of ground cover (grass would make the misses happy)
Photos of the sites would be great. Thanks

Shager, are you really sold on this? What size group are you going in? I'm certain others on here will say go for it, and certainly if you have others around to watch at all times then that's fine, but I would give serious thought to this. Maybe try to ask rangers about activity/numbers etc.
We took our daughter when she was 3mths old and it was the most nerve wracking 5 days camping we've ever had.

Camping with a 3 week old?!?!  Gee mate you must be keen lol
We're going with a 6 and 10 year old for the first time over New Years (yeah crowds, idiots, yada yada yada lol)  The fenced grounds are Dundubara (where we're staying), Waddy Point, Lake Boomanjin and Central Station.  The rest of the guys here may have more input which is best.  We picked Dundubara because we wanted a fenced site (being first timers) and preferred somewhere close to beach.
Cheers

what a shame you were nervous your whole trip fraser is a magical place just requires a little more common sense when it comes to the wildlife. Obviously Dundaburra is well fenced so you won't have any problems there. Being 3 or so weeks old your little one is obviously not going to run away although when not sleeping in your camper or tent will no doubt be watched. Horse flies can be fixed by a simple net. Personally I cannot see a problem with a small baby in fact from experience safer at this stage just go for it I'm sure you'll have a ball. We're still taking our boys to fraser only now their eating whole chickens instead of those little glass pop top jars of mushed stuff.

G,Day Shager .
Nothing like getting the youngun's started camping from the get go, For the camp areas that would have grass, I would say Dilly Village, from memory its fenced, gives good access to the beach .....Lake Boomingen  has a fenced compound that you can camp in, you have to carry everything in by hand into the compound , from memory the same thing at Central station too if your tenting it ..
Waddy point and Dundaburra are fenced too, though the sites arnt what you would call grassy .
Dundaburra has a large grassed area for group bookings that I know of..
Other than that take a good netting to put over the little ones bassinet to stop the march flies getting at the little one .

yes you can. a group of friends have stayed there with camper trailers before, and i was there whilst they set up camp (i was camped on the beach already). i did notice the low hanging trees on some sites made it difficult for atleast one person to open his hard floored camper up, not sure if the trees have been trimmed since though. wasn't all sites though, just some random ones.
cheers

Hi Shags.. the entry to Cathedral beach is a boarded and steep ramp that flattens onto a usualy very soft and deep wheel track rutted sandy section aprox 75m long ...and could be a bit of a challenge with camper trailer depending on conditions ,, really it would pay to have a look at whats at the top first .
The tour busses seem to churn this section up fairly well .Back in July with heavy weather it was a big sandy porridge slop hole right of the ramp top ... if your lucky NP's might have recently run a blade over it ...
They are a private run camp ground, shop etc camp grounds seem nice enough central to most things you may want to drive too .check out ..www Frasers Cathedral Beach Resort .
