in a bag of rice is the best trick, but leave over night then connect to charger to see if it will power up. if you're lucky then try and turn on.
good luck.

the 3's are the easier model to work on.
here's a step by step.
instead of ordering the Irevive spray use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.

If the battery feels like its taken on water it will most likely die.
ebay is an easy way to buy all the replacement parts.

I've rebuilt SWMBO's from a 3g 16gb now countless times.
I started doing screen replacements then onto new battery.
Now the phone is pink and 3gs 32gb.

Some people just leave the phone off and submerge it in 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. (MUST BE 99-100%)
This will get rid of all the water and the Isopropyl Alcohol evaporates after draining for a few days
the brushing with the toothbrush in the clip is to ensure rust doesn't start

I'd at very least soak it the 99% Isopropyl Alcohol before this to remove the water instead of risking frying it.

BD go with the rice, we were away skiing cup weekend and one of the guys went skiing with his phone in his pocket, my daughter suggested the rice so we tried it, left overnite and it worked. First time I have ever seen a phone saved once being in the Murray, then bugger me dead he falls out of the boat and in it goes again, and we revived it a second time. Yeah I know never put your phone in your pocket around boats, I know that but I guess he's a slow learner

Yes cannot beat this

Get bottle of Metho, throw in bottle of metho-complete, for a couple of minutes to soak up water, let dry out for a couple of days, charge, and then turn on.

It may take a couple of more days for screen to dry out.Was told this by a electronics bloke worked and still working on a 5 year old ipod which my daughter put in cup of water. I know it is still working as I used it today. :D

forget rice nappies etc, metho will mix with water and help evaporate it and does not affect circuitry - seen it done on a desk top too. altough info was taken off computer then it was thrown in bin

Cheers

Interested to see how you get on BD.

My suggestion would be to get a plastic tupperware container, fill with the aforementioned rice, and bury the phone in that. Leave the lid off the container, and sit it somewhere warm and breeze, such as on a window shelf. Leave it there for anywhere from a few days to a week. The longer you leave it, the more certain you are that the water has all gone. I've used this method very successfully on a whole range of PC gear. It ain't sexy, and it ain't quick, but it works.

Be careful using a hairdryer or any form of heat (oven, etc), as you risk turning the water to steam and forcing it deeper into the phone. Likewise hitting it with compressed air. Personally I wouldn't use isopropal alcohol/metho either - it can affect multiple things inside the phone. But it sounds like others have had good luck with this method, so it may be worth a shot.

Best bet would be to disassemble the phone as Justin's directed. How much effort you go to depends on whether you want to resurrect the phone, or just get it to fire up long enough to salvage the data.

Good luck!
Matto :)

BD I apologise for the topic hijack, but I have a question for Justin - my iPhone is a 3G and the mic has stopped working, I'm not particularly attached to the phone and am happy to chuck it in the bin and buy a dumb phone, but my kids like it... are there any simple things to check to resolve this?

Hope you get the data back BD.

Generally if the electronic device is on when it hits the water it fries,If it was off use Metho, put it in a bowl and lay mobile in it,its the way to go as suggested before, it draws out the water..Then before you turn on,make sure you blow out the rest of water/condensation etc etc within the phone, making sure its bone dry..

Goodluck
