Selling camper trailer - adds in more than one place??
« on: November 06, 2012, 12:29:14 PM »
Hi

We are about to put our 2011 Jayco Flamingo S/T Outback on the market. Planning on listing on My Swag plus EBAY, Gumtree and Trading Post. Possibly Carsales site as well.

Just wondered how others have managed multiple listings.  Eg if start an auction on EBay and before the auction is completed we get an offer from another site  - one that is too good to turn down - do you have to complete the EBay auction?

Any other cautions or tips for multiple listings?  For a Forum advert easy enough to add a line that camper trailer is also advertised elsewhere and we will do this.

Have read about the various scams and TXTs from workers on oil rigs etc   Plan on selling to someone I get to speak with and who views the camper. Will hold off hand over until  the dollars are cleared in my bank account from direct transfer or bank cheque.

Thanks

Hey mate,  I used caravan sales website (http://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/) to sell my coromal last year.... got a sale within a couple of days...guy paid with cash so no problem... I made it clear in the ad that I will not respond to email or sms inquiries..... although I did get some idiot send me a text wanting to buy my 'car' although I was selling a camper.....  I personally wouldn't touch ebay to sell it...

Could try http://www.campertrailers.org/camper_trader.htm

obviously you will need a safety and gas certificate.. not telling you how to suck eggs..

Regards

Scott

Make it clear that it is advertised elsewhere and that you reserve the right to end the auction early.

And be wary of the SCAMMERS especially on Gumtree but i have had them on Ebay as well the usual speal is that they are working remotely and can i have your Paypal or Bank details where they will deposit money and i have a private contractor that will pickup the goods. Be Careful  !

To me that is a cop out and unfair to anyone who has placed a bid. You are either auctioning it or not. You can't a foot in both camps. Just my opinion of course

Thanks for replies.

Have not used Ebay much at all.  Not sure of legalities in pulling out of an auction once started or even if this us possible. Any thoughts on best options for seller - set price or auction?

You can cancel an eBay auction up to 24 hours before the end date/time. You can list at $1 but set a reserve, if it doesn't hit the reserve it doesn't sell, if it hits the reserve or goes over you're selling. I don't think there is anything 'legal' about eBay, you'll just get crap feedback if you don't go through with the deal.

i agree if the item in question has been bid on then let it run its course as to me that item has been purchased, but if there are no bids before someone else buys it then remove it, it just another advertising tool.

I'd suggest some campers on eBay would get sold outside of eBay and only use eBay as an advertising mechanism.

A lot of cars like muscle cars are like that. There will be a ridiculous reserve so no hope of selling but the exposure it gets is priceless and get sold outside of ebay..

Thats how I bought my C/T. Contacted the seller after the event as it didn't sell, much better. Did all the haggling over the phone prior to inspecting, agreed on a price if his add stacked up.

Pretty simple really

For ebay, A reserve price is the lowest price at which you’re willing to sell your item. The amount of your reserve price isn’t shown to bidders, but they will see that your listing has a reserve price that has not been met. If a bidder doesn’t meet your reserve price, you aren’t obligated to sell your item. Once the reserve price has been met, the reserve price message is no longer displayed in the listing.
If you don’t want to sell your item below a certain price, you could make that amount your starting or Buy It Now price. You can also set a reserve price.
I have personally bought my CT on ebay, sold same CT on ebay, Bought Jayco Finch on ebay, and sold same Jayco Finch on ebay. It is an awesome tool for getting your item out there. All sales were bought and paid for in cash after auction had finished with no issues. I can assure you there are more genuine buyers out there than there are scammers. Check their feedback and if you are happy then there is no problem.

I sold my last one on caravanandcampingsales.com.au and I also had enquiries from this site.  If I was to do it again I would only use the same two.

If selling on ebay there is also a 7.9 % of the final selling price capped at $100 which you have to pay as well as the initial fees for the add

I just listed the Goldstream on eBay, $1 start with reserve price, $24 all up, not bad.

Someone has set their auto bid. I just bid to 3.5K and keep getting outbid.

Woohoo I am the highest bidder..........You should shut the auction down now and sell the goldstream to me for $5150.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Interesting stats from eBay. The camper ad has been up for almost 24 hours, 640 views, 111 watchers, 10 questions and 26 bids. Still a little way to go to hit the reserve though. Not bad for $24 :)

We opted to place our camper for sale on EBay, Trading Post and of course MySwag.

EBay after 9 hours - 8 bids, 30 watchers, 147 views

If you use eBay you don't have to auction it.  You can do a classified ad the same as Trading Post or Gumtree and still get the same eBay exposure.

We recently purchased a 2nd hand Jayco Eagle OB and spent the 8 weeks prior trawling all the online classifieds.
Ebay, Trading Post, Gumtree, Caravan and Camping Sales, plus dealer websites.

In all honesty I shied away from eBay auctions as it usually meant tight timeframes to inspect (not a chance in hell I'm bidding on something of that value without seeing it in the flesh first), strict buying conditions or some owners seemed a bit prickly to deal with when asked questions like "can I have the vin no. to do a background check" "is any finance owing on it" "can I have your phone no. to arrange an inspection".  The seller of an OB Hawk seemed happy to answer the tough questions like "what colour are the curtains" and "is the annex in 'as new' condition", but not my questions... maybe it's me ???

We ended up finding ours on Trading Post and that was the only place the seller listed it.  You would sometimes see a double up on Gumtree (I think it's free to list) or Ebay, but the bulk of campers (Jayco's anyway) being sold were on Trading Post and Caravan and Camping Sales.

Given 95% of buyers probably look at all of the above sites, I wouldn't bother doing multiple listings unless they're free.

Day 2 numbers - 1031 views, 126 watchers, 12 questions and 35 bids. Bid amounts are getting smaller, the auction might be running out of steam...

If it hits the reserve I'll be very happy but I am realistic and will bargain with the highest bidder if it doesn't hit the reserve.
