NSW Camper Trailer Designation Nightmare
« on: November 05, 2012, 06:47:51 PM »
Ok just arrived back home to NSW from QLD with my Jimboomba CT.First had to get a blue slip which normally is $30 but because it was from another state had to also pay for a data check another $26, only had to pay this because he could not find Jimboombas Data Specs on the RTA website ,strange anyway he had to physically do a enginering check so i had to pay for that.Next were of to pay for rego, NSW ripoff $201 QLD was $85.Even had to pay for the number plate.Next is when the confusion started in QLD it was designated on the Motor Transport Register as a Camper Trailer here it is designated on our RTA site as a Box Trailer so then they want to charge me Stamp Duty $300 WTF not happy. Then i realize i might be eligible for concession which i was phew saved $300 but what a nightmare i said to the consultant it should be designated as per what its engineered for which is a CT not a Box Trailer. So glad its in my name now .

Get another change of details blue slip and the rego papers will be changed. I refused to pay the stamp duty on my CT and got the code changed. $26 is all it cost and camp trailers are exempt from stamp duty. Saved me in excess of $900 and I don't have to have the same argument each year.

Good fun isn't it........

Wouldn't it be good if some of the high ranking people in the RTA tried to streamline things instead of sitting back and just taking the money on false pretences !!

Like Jason said and happened to me stamp duty is exempt from camper trailers. I'd be going back and state your case. Should get a reimbursement

Yep - a similar problem here but even more annoying was that it was identified as a camper trailer but the person at the RTA still said I had to pay stamp duty as that is what her computer told her.  I ended up having to get a refund through the office of state revenue.  A lot of messing around but got the refund in the end.

My Interpretation is, Permanent bedding = caravan. No stamp duty in NSW. Hth

I was lucky transferring my CT bought 2nd hand in ACT. Reg papers showed it as caravan, but I said that's odd because it's not a caravan but a CT. The clerk changed it without any further questions and trailers being exempt I saved a heap in stamp duty. I think it helped that the roadworthy inspection report listed it as a CT.

G'day bushbandit,
This just highlights again what a screw up the RMS(Roads and Maritime Services) is, nothing has changed over the past 20 years except for a name change every now & then.
Seriously, this is why NSW is so far behind the rest of the country, nothing is simple or easy in NSW dealing with government departments and this starts at local government.
Rant over.  ;D

If I have this wrong, just tell me to pull my head in...won't be offended, I'm use to it :)

NSW rego is $201 every year as a CT, but as a box trailer, it's (around) $60 every year?

Look on the bright side as you have yourselves a fantastic camper trailer, so after a couple of trips you will have forgotten all about the crap these government departments puts us through.

So true but its frustrating having to deal with them at the time ,in my case it was all because the Data Sheet for Jimboomba CTs was not on the RTA website so when the mechanic did the blue slip and manual data/engineer check he wrote on the blue slip BOX TRAILER so the RTA went by what he said they cant think outside the Square, anyway all done im happy, now of to Tassie

Hi Guys

I have to agree that trailer rego costs are over top in NSW in comparison to other states.

The current trailer rego costs are:

Tare under 254 kg      $59             (no yearly rego checks)
Tare 255 to 764 kg    $161            (yearly rego checks)
Tare 765 to 975         $245            (yearly rego checks)

Plus you pay for number plate, blue slip & weigh bridge on new regos
There is no stamp duty in NSW on camper trailers but there is on a load carrying trailers (box, bike etc.)

regards

JC

The Cub we just bought of a local dealer, took the paper work to the RTA to change it into our name and cost us $30.
Cheers
