Far out, was just saying what a bargain my old man found.  Maybe I should shut up about the 5kva Honda Gennie that he found that starts first kick everytime.  Or about the great big box of brand new vibes that was found....funnily enough nobody's claimed them LOL
Vic says forget the legal side of it, if you can, just go for a good scrounge it's good fun lol

I threw out about 30 bottles of wine (I don't drink it and the boss gave us 5 bottles each year for Xmas) and it was gone before I even got the rest of my stuff out there ... I had no idea how to store it (was in the garden shed okay?).

Kit_e

Kit_e, that was very irresponsible. I'm sure that there are fellow swaggers on here that are highly experienced in the disposal of unwanted wine;)

A safe with $26 K accidently left in it is hardly the same as a $10 candelabra deliberately thrown out.

When the candelabra is sitting in the fenced off tip the Law presumes you know it belongs to the tip owners and in any case tip owners place large signs to remind you that is the case. Well unless of course it was stolen originally, that can be proven and it is returned to its rightful owner. That applies whether or not it has passed through many innocent hands since and the last possessor threw it out as junk, completely unaware it was a valuable antique worth say $26000.

That's the Law and for very good reason and I've yet to see any threshold value test in the Law of larceny but I'm all ears if you can point me to it and its particular jurisdiction. I tell my son you're either a thief or you're not and there aint no grey about it son and be mindful of theft by finding or those with fuzzy ethics.

If the item is in your garbage bin at the front of the house before it is collected. Who's property is it? You have shown your intent to toss the garbage. Not wanted. Not in transit to or in the hands of the tip.

Yep, belongs to the council, just the same as all the rubbish (gold) put out for "clean up". Once on the footpath, it belongs to council.

I see a lot of heading off in la la land here...
Paper, documents etc are usually taken elsewhere, not landfill...so has no bearing/no need to be used in an argument for or against as far as what the OP originally posted about here!
Tips - sorry..."transfer/waste stations" is where rubbish is thrown/taken, Again, what the topic is about.
Residences & places of business have absolutely NO similarities to tips as far as content, provisions etc go. It's like someone talking about shoes, & someone else trying to compare them to trains!

To return to the topic of tips it was quite a few moons ago I realised why tips have the policies they do. I was a regular tipping the tandem trailer when I noticed truckloads of apparently good plasterboard and naturally asked the question is it for sale. Nah mate was the instant reply. It's going to be bulldozed because that's our brief. Bit of a waste thinks I but you realize with experience why it's so-
http://defectivechinesedrywall.com/what_is_it.htm

Same with the lad when he was starting out on his own and a proportion of clients would ask the inevitable- how much for cash, nudge, nudge, wink, wink. How do I handle that dad? That's easy son you look em straight in the eye and say- Yes I'm aware some tradeys want to cheat the tax office but if they're like that they'd probably cheat their customers and I always assume my customers wouldn't want that. Besides, you don't know the punter from a pile of faulty plasterboard and he just might be an ATO employee testing you out.

Anyway he quickly worked out it nails the right customers and weeds out the potential problem types. What sort of customer are you? Black...white...fuzzy...?

Interesting!  It belongs to the council once it's on the footpath, yet if a bin is knocked over and rubbish spills onto the ground, the council will expect the bin owner to clean it up.....at least that's how it works where I am.

Goes the same here Rotare, & I imagine everywhere else too. Same with the grass out the front, belongs to council, but we're expected to mow it.
I've often wondered what would happen if I just left that strip & never mowed it. But I know the Minister would start on me before there was any (re)action from the council  ::)  *lol*

Good to know about how them tradesmen work/think?
Should I be calling up past tradesmen & tell they owe me because they were suppose to do a top-notch job because I paid "on the books"?
Nah, not worth the grief. I'll stick with the blokes I now who're happy for a fairer price in the skyrocket, knowing they'll also do a top-notch job ;)

I just don't understand why people take perfectly useful stuff to the tip anyway?  ??? Have they not heard of op shops? On top of that you have to pay the tip to dump it. When you can walk into a charity shop, pass on the stuff to grateful volunteers, saving space in the landfill, supporting a charity, giving someone a bargain and doing this all for free! I don't understand humans sometimes.

1) Because you already have a trailer load of rubbish that needs to go to the tip anyway
2) Because most goodwill /op shop / salvo places are selective with what they will take (eg, no electrical goods, car parts, large furnishings etc)
3) Because when you try to give away stuff via the local notice board people end up stuffing you around and its easier just to throw it away
4) Because everyone has a different opinion of what is rubbish, what is sellable, or what can easily be recycled

Rotare, and that's why Vic has 2 acres of sh!t we're trying to clear up lol
Everything from fencing materials, to horse drawn silt scoops, to hand powered bench drills.  Plus the 1000 other parts from cars he's dismantled, plus 5 containers of cr@p he got from a mate that we haven't even got to the bottom of yet lol  Good thing we bought 50acres in QLD lol

So if the footpath and everything on it belongs to the council, why do I have to mow it out of my pocket ... oh yeah, whole other topic.  Sorry.

If everything on the footpath belongs to the Council, does that mean I can't go to the bin I use for rubbish and remove something once the bin is on the footpath?

Need to answer this. I was talking to a solicitor friend who works for a local council and he said you dont have to mow it, just ask the council to attend but dont expect them to mow it on your schedule.

There has never been a requirement to mow the nature strip (in the Sydney area at least). It is the responsibility of the local Council.
Often see corner blocks with high paling fences down the side have long grass on the side street side. But you wouldn't leave it to Council because they sometimes use tractors pulling those grass choppers (can't call them mowers) and half rip the grass out of the ground and leave tyre ruts.
It is OK if you don't care.

Don't anyone dare mention to prodigy how they had a mate do a welding job on a trailer for a couple of cold slabs, that would be thieving from a proper fabrication business. Come on mate, seriously. Take your halo off please ;D

We have just had a council general rubbish pickup. I through out a dishwasher and washing machine and both were gone the same day by fossickers. No probs with that but when people search through your rubbish and spread the pile 5 times bigger than it was pisses me off.

Prodigy,chill out fella

Should you live at our local tip, thn I'll remember not to go poking around in your crap.

Failing that, I reckon its better to take home and have a happy wife, than more landfill.

Someone obviously either didn't like it or didnt want it, but I thought it was good enough to take home. Perhaps they didn't have the patience for a garage sale, who cares.

Forget the preaching, just post up what other good finds you've all squires or found.

We've just had a local curbside hard waste collection, ,post up your good finds, gotta love a free bargain

Ha! You're talking to someone who remembers hanging around unfenced, burning rubbish tips as a kid scrounging old pram wheels for a billycart and the like. So now I have to deal with Vol 1 and 2 of the Building Code of Australia with State Appendices referencing a library full of Australian Standards, OHS, Fair Work Act, ASIC, ACCC, Australian Consumer Law, ATO, etc, etc and if my halo slips for an instant I'm in deep doo doo with all you fuzzy types calling for my head because it's all my fault and that's why you made all those Laws and Regulations in the first place. Then I'm supposed to cheer when the current Federal Govt proudly announce they've managed to pass a hundred pieces of Legislation through a difficult Parliament. Presumably that's because of so many fuzzy people out there nowadays that require them all to get through their day. Must admit I shake my head at what the next gen are up against with all this quicksand.

Anyway how'd you all do advising the lad about how to handle the surprise $26k in the ebay safe. Finders keepers? Or did you email back our 'Power Seller' saying you were surprised to find a sum of money in it and can he name the sum and how it came to be there and if he can you'll direct him to the police who now have it trying to establish it's rightful owner and if they can't, then it will be yours by finding?

Arrgh, just experiencing more and more of late, some ordinary decent tradeys and the odd young bloke getting screwed over by Laws, Regulations and red tape they have no idea about and shaking my head at the judgements and penalties. I'm just about out of it now, but you do get a bit paranoid for the lad and his young mates in future with the legal quagmire and potential liability they're up against.

WTF are these public service office jocks and nanny staters doing to this country?
