I found out some time back the speed or mass of the stone are not as important as how sharp the point is hitting the glass. Go back years and the son is a tacker riding MX and we're cutting it fine for machine inspection, unloading the PeeWee50, etc from the WB work ute and you guessed it I locked the keys in the car and the helmet's inside. Wa wa dad we'll be late. Me grabbing 10" shifter deciding the passenger window can go and I'll grab another from the wreckers next door at work Monday. Stand back son! As I recall it took about 8 hits getting harder and harder before finally shattering with a blow that would smash your skull.

Recounted that to the windscreen guy who was refitting the same window to my Commode ute a few years back after a spate of such breakings all over coastal Adelaide one wet night, saying I never heard a thing. You wouldn't says he. Just try tapping it with the point of a nice sharp centre punch and Bobsyeruncle. Apparently the real little villains nick the diamond point emergency windscreen breakers out of the buses as the perfect tool.

A year or so later grown lad drives down the street in his Commode wagon with unsecured telly in the back and turns the corner and it slides across and telly corner meets rear window and kapow. It hardly nudged it dad says he recalling my shifter effort. Lyndhurst to William Creek with no real stone protection and 15mins out of Wm Ck just the right pointed stone hit the back windscreen and let the Great Outback in and I'm still getting it out.

I worked out safety glass is just like us. Would you prefer I shove you in the chest with the flat of my hand or with a stilletto knife in it? The brother and brother in law worked it out installing a frameless shower screen recently. One minute they were holding a very awkward heavy sheet of glass and next second they weren't after they just nicked the corner on the floor tiles.

All that is what set me to working out just how "they shall not pass" whatever the little villains' size, shape or velocity-

There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

When you get pulled by the cops for a breath test or taken to the booze bus, why can't you touch the breathalyser or hose?
And no, wasn't me, just watching RBT

Because of the possibility of squashing the hose flat and corrupting the result.

People try all sorts of things with that test.

How would crushing the pipe corrupt the result? Wouldn't it just reduce the volume of air/alcohol mix?
The initial test has a tube around 50mm long and looks like that would be hard to squeeze.

The wonders of science.  :-\
Hydrogen gas on its own is flammable at least.
Oxygen gas is essential to combustion.
Mix them together (H2O)and we have water which we use to extinguish fire.
Go figure.  ???

Protecting the officer, infectious disease etc can be transferred, hep c etc. if done properly the officer will not touch the mouth piece with his bare hands.

The small machine with the tube on the top.  Tube is 100mm long with a restriction on the exit end
The clear plastic mouthpiece approx 50mm long, with off set in and out tubes, is a moisture trap, usually found on the bigger machine in the booze bus or Station..
They have to deliver 1 litre of air to satisfy the test, measured inside the machine.
Insufficient air into the machine is a fail.
If you deliberately cause a failed test, you suffer a penalty anyway, in Vic.  You are given a warning and a chance to retry as part of the procedure.
Then there's the part where they can take you to Hospital and get a blood sample as well.  Forcibly if necessary.  In Vic.

I can understand that, not corrupted by insufficient air, just a failed attempt. Thanks

Back to the original post, even though the original thread is somewhat dated!

Q1. I always get a tax invoice when buying fuel, even though, sadly, I cannot claim it anywhere.

This is because the tax invoice is the only way you can have positive evidence of purchase of fuel should there be an issue arise. It shows date, cost, time, place, amount and the retailers contact details.

Add to this if you get a bad batch - (full of water) is handy to have proof of purchase, happened to me in a 1 month old corolla, the Shit I had to go through to get it sorted was unbelievable, but ended well.

Depending on the person less chance of them throwing it. Otherwise

Hand held unit less chance of dropping it or dislodging the tube.

Large unit didn’t matter if they hold it. The hose can’t be crushed.
If they can’t provide a sufficient sample than as mentioned they go to blood. No they don’t do it forcibly. If they refuse (at any point during the process) they get charged with that offence. The penalty is minimum 2 year licence loss. Double if they have a previous offence

Also, in NSW it is required by law to issue a receipt for any payment over $2... or used to be.   This has now been increased...

Under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) there are a number of obligations on businesses. These include an obligation to provide proof of transaction to consumers for goods or services valued at $75 (excluding GST) or more. Businesses are also required to provide a receipt for any transaction under $75 within 7days if the consumer asks for one.

Even the self serve check outs ask these days.....
