Just took out cover with CIL. An additional $1000 contents - i.e. above the included $1000 - was $16 per year, so I'm paying $305 a year.
Trailer valued at $13,500; Annexe at $1,500 and $2,000 of contents, so $17,000 of coverage all up.
I recon that is fair value, given what I am covered for, which is all I think it is reasonable to ask.

Can anyone advise me where I might get insurance for my home built camper trailer (see my thread at http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=19305.50 )  ?

I have tried APIA (me being over half a century) but they only insure branded CTs.  Have tried Shannons and they don't insure caravans, motorhomes, trailers etc.

Any suggestions ??? ??? ???

Only thing to watch with CIL is the content cover for theft is only there if you have "hard walls", so a caravan.  Camper trailers contents will only be theft covered if locked in a tool box or the likes.

GIO, $320 for $22500 including $4000 contents. $100 excess.

Contents covers anything in the camper except bikes, scooters and other kids toys.

Ok, spoke to the very friendly people at the RACT today and they are more than happy to insure my camper trailer for $12000 including the annex and all fixtures for an annual premium of $190.00  As I wont be sleeping in it they will not cover loose contents such as cooking stuff etc but the fridge, stove, water heater, tank and pump are covered.

On my jobs list right now is to get our insurance for the GoldStream sorted before our big trip. Has anyone has experience in getting a policy that is very 'comprehensive' being we will be living in it for at least 6 months, all around australia, and taking on all sorts of dirt/off roads?

Will also need to have pretty high contents coverage as we will be living in it, we will have a little more then the average camping trip.

just shopped around for renewal - QBE $16 500 ct , $3000 annex and awning and $1000 contents $241 / year

Anyone got a tip on who is very comprehensive for a big trip? I hear horror stories about people not being covered because the address they have registered on their policy (ie where the mail goes) is not the living address? Not covered for direct roads, only covered for 1000klms from home etc etc?

Just switched to CIL. Same price as current insurance but they know what a CT is and have better conditions

288 for total $14.5k cover inc 3k contents.  :)

Did the ring around for the KK and cil where $560 Pa , the next closest was $760 pa up to $956 from racv . No brainer really, and cil are underwritten by suncorp.

Sorry to revive an old thread.  We are currently insured with RACV and want to upgrade the contents cover.  Mrs Tread has been doing the ring around and called CIL.  And as Cracka notes, CIL said they do not cover contents for theft from inside your annex or soft walled tent when it is set up. They only cover contents when they are all locked away (ie if damaged in an accident or stolen from a packed up camper).

So my questions: do people (especially those recommending CIL) realize they may not be covered for theft if you are set up at a camp site? And does anyone know of an insurance company that does cover theft from inside a set up camper trailer?

Realistically would anyone expect an insurer to cover items in a non hard walled environment? Just like your home, locks etc are only a deterrent: they won't stop a determined thief. For wind up CT's it amazes me that locks are fitted to the doors at all when access can be gained thru the bed ends, or a trusty knife to the canvas or plastic windows. At least with a caravan the lock has to be picked or broken.

I had a look at TCIS, the seem to cover a lot, the 4x4 policy is great, a little more $$ than Suncorp but a lot more cover.  Their camper insurance covers off road and canvas parts, they also will cover camping equipment, I've not read the PDS fully but I'll be considering them once I get the trailer completed

Your home & contents will cover your camping gear, CIL will cover anything that came standard with the CT
