Posted up about this before, but now they are digging them up

"We estimate that there are at least 60 Spitfires buried and they are in good condition," said Htoo Htoo Zaw, Mr Cundall's Burmese business partner. "This will be the largest number of Spitfires in the world.

BIL who is an aviation nut was talking about this the other day.  Have there been any photos yet?

There was a similar story about ww2 harleys in the top end.

These WWII aircraft remind me of my dear old Grandpa who killed Japs in Darwin.... mind you it was only a couple of years ago....

I believe One of those japs was my uncle.

Wow, what a find! I love these Spitfires. I have fond memories of building models of them and P51 Mustangs as a kid, and dad would hang them from my bedroom ceiling.

ABSOLUTE crock of sh!t. They roll this little chestnut out about every 5 years and change the aircraft/car/motorbike type. Show me the UN-DOCTORED pics and video and I'll start to consider my position.

This is when people start to get emails requesting money to "liberate these last captured treasures of World War 2" and such.

Move on, get another scam, ladies.

You wouldn't be surprised about the stories around here then  ;D
Moruya was a major aviation port during WWII, & there's a few bunkers still scattered through the bush. Many talk of underground hangers jam packed with surplus planes, vehicles etc....
Many the talk I've heard over the years sitting 'round the fires, stubbie in hand, of Harleys buried by the Defense, never seen proof though *lol*

Love the idea of this - such a beautiful plane.   I'll have one too!

Imagine finding them - 2.3million x 60 planes - lots of beer to be drunk on those profits.

And POD - leave us our dreams - love the idea of finding lost/buried treasure.

They weren't Harleys, more like Indian motorcycles and it was the Americans who left them here.

My FIL had one of the many Indians that the American's left behind after the war. He was in the Airforce, flew P51's and eventually Vampire jets and had managed to "procure" a spare Indian.  I actually in the last few years have just sold the engine and some other parts from it to an enthusiast. I still have an original sticker for it somewhere, which I won't part with!

Unfortunately, we'd have had the full bike if it weren't for my FIL's sister who had used the frame years ago as reinforcing in her concrete steps!  :o ::) Clearly some people have no appreciation for fine motorcycles.

When we were in PNG there was a crate of .303 rifles found.  Timber crate, heaps of rifles, all greased and wrapped in some sort of greasy paper.  Would have loved to bring one home but didn't think I had any hope of being allowed...

Similar thing down here in Vic "apparently" Although jeeps and tanks in the bunkers, outer east Melbourne, There are some old photo's "Apparently" of the opening into the side of a hill.....

Duchess...I only used Harleys as the example because that was the breed used by dazzler. To be precise about the 'stories' I've listen to amongst 'the boys', yes the Indian was mentioned as well, along with BSA's & Trumpys, because the Pom's refused to ride them Yank bikes.
And the topic is about digging up preserved surplus, from what you're saying, your FIL's Indian was in use at the time of the Yanks leaving, or just prior to!

Glad to hear the parts went to someone who'd appreciate their past, though a shame about your FIL's sister, some times the ignorant can't be educated ;)

Bob, I believe that the bikes were actually just dumped at the end of the air strips, hence them being a bit of fair game and yep, they would have been used around the base I guess. I can't imagine that they'd have bothered to bury anything quite frankly! Though if there really is stuff buried, it would be interesting to know what is buried up around Bamaga where apparently there were a heck of a lot of military up there in WW2. Judging by the amount of rusting 44 gallon drums I saw in the scrub around Bamaga airport, there must have been a heck of a lot of aircraft. Makes you wonder really, doesn't it...
