It just wont work
« on: October 16, 2012, 05:13:37 PM »
2 weeks ago we took delivery of our brand new Lifestyle Walkthru

Kitchen in the walkthru is a standard tailgate kitchen (so nothing to fancy) and I am sick of rumaging through plastic tubs for kitchen gear so I decided to splurge just a little more and order a Drifta fridge box package deal with the idea that we would put in our existing 60L engel fridge, well best laid plans.......

Turns out that our engel fridge will just not fit, doesnt matter how long we stare at the damn thing - it still wont magically get a little smaller. And no its not just the engel being difficult, tried the same caper on the camper (nearly blew out my frontal lobe) but it seems to have no interest in raising its sides by 40mm either.

So now the conundrum, forget the fridge box in the kitchen and just have a ground dwelling fridge or spend another $1000 getting an evacool fridge so it will fit. The thought of the second one really stings considering how much the engel cost in the first place.

Throughout this Luke from Drifta has been a great help, but when it cant be done it just cant be done.

That sounds like a Maxwell Smart Moment, Missed by that much Chief!!!

You still have a great setup, perhaps its time to trade the Engel on one that will fit?  That mite be a bit  >:( if its not that old, but hey, the end result will be that you get want you wanted in the first place.

I agree, you really wanted the drifta so go out and get another fridge, sell the engel and it all ends well.

Or you will be forever saying geez if i'd just bought another fridge :)

What is the issue? the width or height of the engel? I had the same problem with my drifta setup in the CT I ended up using a hole saw and drilled out where the 4 black disc feet of the engel sat. That lowered it enough for me. Might be worth a look.

The fridge is probably 4 years old, but for the first three only got used once as we didnt have the setup to run a fridge, finally got a 4WD and put a duel battery system in it a little over a year ago. Sold the 4WD about 6 weeks ago  :'(
If I sold the engel im sure I could make near enough to cover the new fridge, but I would prefer to just keep the one I already have. Im all for spending money on stuff I dont really need but there has to be a limit, especially as right now I also need to buy a new4WD and a new house.

The issue is the height, the camper is 500mm high but that isnt the internal measurments. We had a play around with it yesterday and taking off the feet and frinding away the stumps the feet attach too just wont get us there unfortunately.

We discussed keeping it and getting another, but two 60ltr fridges is just overkill for our needs and the engel took up half the space in the back of the 150. If it was smaller we would keep it and use it as a freezer for longer trips.

Thankyou for the offer barnys but I dont want to make this an engel vs that other contraption debate  ;D  >:D

Right now our plan is to have the kitchen built to fit a fridge and keep what we have, storing the engel in either the car or the walkway while in transit and transferring it to the kitchen after setup, that way if the transfer thing doesnt work for us we still have the option to get the evacool and pop it straight into the waiting fridge hole.

A 60L Engel, with a slight modification, WILL fit in the walkway, even on a slide. I reckon it's a better spot for it.. I am saying this on the assumption that a Lifestyle Walkthru has the same opening on the side as an Extenda.

See details here of our 60L Engel, fitted into a Lifestyle Extenda: http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=8420.msg293636#msg293636

Or, alternatively, sell the Engel, accept the $ loss as a life lesson, and buy a lower height ARB 60L which I'm pretty sure will fit. :)
