Ground clearance on an off road camper trailer?
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:27:42 PM »
Hey folks,

This may be a length of string question, but how high would you consider an axle has to be off the ground to be really considered for off road touring? Not boulder hopping, creek traversing type stuff, but just your typical journey off road, where you may encounter washouts, potholes, deep ruts and the like.

I noticed a sign on a trip this weekend that said "4wd - minimum clearance 200mm" - would that be adequate for typical off roading?

Cheers, Paul

I would think more about how long the trailer is. If when you go through a wash out if the draw bar or back end will drag. I know I had this experience. And cost a bit to fix... Height is not everything.

Depends on the size of your tyres of course....now a 265/75x16 tyre is around 803mm in diameter. So depend on the size of the axle, say 2 inch, so you would have 803/2 less 25mm = 376.5mm am I correct? I have independent air so I will have to air it right up and have a measure see what I've got.

I would say more along the lines of at least being as high as the lowest part of the tow vehicles undercarriage/driveline along with over hang and draw bar length as well. so if you at least matched the trailer wheels to tow vehicle there shouldnt be 2 many dramas.

It's no use being any taller than your tow vehicle but 200mm is OK; that's around Prado/Territory/Hilux/Pajero clearance in centre of vehicle track
