Private Import Trailer

Do anyone have experience in importing a trailer? (from South Africa will be great)
I am looking at the Jurgens XT140. It cost only R44,450 (AUD$4,960)
It is still an excellant bargain, even with a 50% uplift for import duty and registration.

I think there is some rule about if they are available in the australian market, you cannot import them. I know thats the way with cars and m/bikes... 
this is what stopped people importing the GU Short Wheelbase into AU...

Call a freight forwarder they might point you to who to contact.

What happens if there is a problem with it when it arrives?, you can't just send it back to them.

I'm fairly sure they arent going to do themselves out of a healthy profit.

Good point about Jurgens Australia - I'll contact them but yes they will add their profit to the trailer.
Jurgens is wel known in South Africa - we had a 1972 caravan that we bought new and sold it last year. It still had all the original cutlery in it.

I am getting all my paperwork together and am finding out what I need and who need to sign where.
Australia is full of rules and paperwork, but I am working through it.

Getting it here will only be the start. It will then need to be certified for electrics, gas etc. and roadworthyness. I've spoken to people who have imported 5th wheelers from us. They have to re-do electrics to cope with 240 volt and replace the gas lines as in america they use galvanised pipe which is not accpeted here. So you will need to factor all this into your calculations.

The XT Jurgens is a box trailer, so no gas lines or eletrics. It only have two water tanks as standard. You can fit it out but to avoid the certification issue I'll do it myself here in Brisbane. One can compare it to the Track Trailer Mate which is AUD$16k!

I'll be interested to know how much they asked for the trailer at the Sydney show.
Do you know who advertised them at the show?

i remember thinking to myself it was cheap, but cant recall the price as i wasn't really looking for trailers. whoever had it only had the one and they had fitted a roof top tent to it. if i had to take a guess it was a traders personal trailer that they wanted to sell off, i dont recall any other trailers next to it.......i think it was opposite Pat's stand

I contact Jurgens factory in South Africa and the lead trailer designer contact me.
He is extremely helpfull, so know it is just a matter of filling in the million forms before I can buy and import it.

I looked at importing stuff from SA too and if you've owned it for 12 months or longer, you can bring it in no matter what. I reckon you could share shipping costs with some by sharing a container with someone. So if you are in SA for a while soon, but the bloody thing and store it somewhere for 12 months then bring it in.

If there is something wrong with it, Jurgens Aus can fix it (for an exorbitant cost, no doubt), but it will still be a $4k van. Even if you spent $4k fixing it - it would still be dirt cheap.

I may or may not own a motorcycle that I may or may not be importing in the not too distant future or maybe the distant future. Either way - it's gonna be real cheap. Allegedly

If its from some countries, you not only need to own it for 12mths, you need to have lived there too, and prove it. like cars from NZ.

My mistake I actually bought it awhile back and I've storing it at my parents place, so no import tax!
