Stop squeeking poles
« on: October 15, 2012, 01:19:45 PM »
Maybe it is only us, but is there a way of stop the squeeking noise of the CT poles when it is windy?
We went camping last weekend at Sandy Cape (WA) and although we were a bit sheltered from the wind, it was still blowing.
With a little wind, the canvass flaps and the poles are squeeking.
Are we the only one with this very annoying noise?
Is there a way to stop it? Apart from not camping when windy.

Give them a quick spray with a silicone spray?  Candle wax them?  Earplugs?  Get noisier birds over your way?  Take some kids?  Have some loud music going?  Install another annoying noise that is just a smidge louder than the squeeking?  ;D

Cannot say I have ever noticed it, but that may be because I snore so loudly :D

do you know which poles are 'squeaking'...? The awning poles?
Same with the canvas?? is it the awning only?

as to stoppiung the canvas flapping, I loop the rope round the pole, and then down.. stops the front flapping anyway.

Could try WD40.
I stopped the other annoying noise: the ticking and c langing of the zipper lever against the zipper. Used some tape around the lever and gone.
It is the inner poles from the main canvass which are making the noise.

Yes, those little tabs!  >:D
They were very audible. I don't mind a little flapping of canvass but some noises are keeping us awake.
And that was one of them.
I am glad I could manage t have you all smiling today.

If all else fails bind around firmly with 6 B&S and coat liberally with Sikaflex. I'd try the poles first.

OK seriously now. Presumably the squeaky poles are the fixed length push together variety and the fit is rather ordinary with a fair degree of movement. In that case I'd use silicon on the joint and keep working it around so it doesn't set sticking the poles together. Perhaps while watching the nutbox because it may take a while and you don't wnat to end up with a solid pole, but rather a firmer cushioned joint. Suck it and see on one pole but it might be too tedious to get the desired effect and also you may have to label the finished pole halves as they'll likely only fit their treated mate.

Thanks Dazza.
It is one of the three poles sitting together where they are "hinging".

Next time we well buy a Tvan, minimum of canvass.  ;D
I was surprised that there is so much more squeeking than in a tent.

I do like a drink but with two young kids waking up early it isn't a good idea to drink too much to get rid of the noise, as you will definately have issues the next morning.

I was being very serious when I mentioned candle wax.  Or perhaps some soap (works well on sticky windows and getting screws to go in hardwood).

;D  Loving some of the answers though.

Definitely a serious contribution with the candle wax(also similar surfboard and beeswax) whereas the soap will dissolve.  Still, it's worth exhausting all possibilities before the 'Final Solution' of B&S and Sika around the head and ears  :cup:

Darren how can you resist a spot like this?
Will bring candle wax next time and try it.
We know which pole it is as when I was sitting against it it stopped. But it is difficult sleeping that way.  :D

We think it is at the bottom of the pole where it "hinges", see a few posts back.
There are 3 sitting together, mounted to the upright by a bolt.

If its in the mounting box bracket, it sounds like some one forgot to put in a few nylon washers between the poles and the mount, if its in the push up to main pole section, just put a little  " ding  "in the outer pole with a pin punch to take up any movement between the inner and outer pole, BUT dont over do it ..
