Paying for goods from China
« on: October 03, 2012, 10:06:35 PM »
I am interested in buying some items direct from a manufacturer in China. The 2 methods of payment offered are Western Union and T/T (wire transfer)
Western Union I will avoid like the plague, but what is T/T?
The details given have the field headings:-

T/T(WIRE TRANSFER):
Account NO.: XXX XXXXXX XXX
Account Name: ..........
Bank name: ...........
SWIFT CODE: AAAAAAAAAAA
Address: ..........

How would I go about paying by this means?. There is about $150US involved

I purchase hundreds of thousands of dollars of stuff from China. Both methods are fine. Like you I was wary of Western Union but for some merchants it is the only way. Be aware often they'll ask for you to cover the transaction cost as well as their margins can be thin.

T/T is easy and fast, make sure you pay on a day when the Aussie dollar is strong and get the most for your buck.

If you have Internet banking there will be an option to transfer funds - then broken down to local and international -- Select International and it will give you some fields to fill in inclusing the swift code etc ...
It is very easy but make sure you check all the numbers VERY VERY CAREFULLY before pressing the send funds button ... All my business trransactions are done this way and its very easy ..

Another option for T/T is using http://www.ozforex.com.au/ or similar.
I received better rates and less fees than using the International Transfer through my bank.

Whoever you are buying from ask them to send you a PayPal invoice for the goods to your email. This is how I pay for all my stuff from china and never had any of them say no. Nice n quick n easy.

Thanks for the advice guys.  After some investigation with the info gleaned here:
Wire Transfer from my Credit Union is not possible.  They use a sub branch of Weston Union - See below
Western Union work in several ways, the 2 most likely to be used here are:
Person to person - no thanks - Available from Australia Post or Western Union branch offices - Australian Post cost =$10
Direct to a bank account - Available from Australia Post and my credit union (via the affiliate - I have forgot thier name), but there is no facility to transfer to Chine - most other countries, but not China!!??
International bank transfer by one of the big 4 banks - I tried National Bank
Can do.  over the counter $30, on-line using your log-in to your account - $22 plus any other fees that may be uncured by ?? and the receiving bank along the way.  Seems to be no limit to the amount to transfer (with-out being silly)
Transfer via "Ozforex" seems possible, but they have a minimum transfer of $2000.  As I am talking around $150, they are out.

I have contacted the supplier to ask about PayPal, even though they have not stipulated this as an acceptable method of payment.  Perhaps as they are the manufacturer, this is just a piddly small sum for them.  Perhaps they are used to deeling in 100-1000+ units and hence big $$ where wire, bank to bank transfers would be more appropriate.  Who knows.

Ask the supplier if they are members of Alibaba/Aliexpress
,I use them successfully.
They hold payment through your creditcard and other ways, untill you recieve your goods.
I think it was setup for the genuine sellers to bypass the bad name China had.

hope this helps someone.
Cheers.

Chairman Mao doesn't allow its plebs to use nasty, capitalist Paypal for the obvious reason they could send their dough out of the country by that means and make Big Brother control of the Yuan exchange rate impossible. Not that dear, beloved BB would ever undervalue the Yuan and hence the plebs' return for their sweat of course  ;D
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.
