Queensland Ghost Towns.

I've been following the trip by JKohn (thanks for sharing, great trip) in the trips thread etc and i'm taken in abit by the Farina Ruins.

I googled ghost towns in Queensland with only an average result and most in the very north of Queensland.

Does anyone have any info on the subject, as i'm thinking a camping trip to a ghost town could be a bit of a hoot.

On our 2005 trip to north Queensland on the bikes, i can vaguely remember a place called Greenvale that was or still is a ghost town that was being reinvented or something.

I'm about to google it, but any info would be nice.

We went for a visit to Greenvale last week when we were at Reedybrook.
Still a few people there, pub, caravan park and a good roadhouse.
I've heard that they are thinking of opening up mining in the area again.

 :D Hi, yep as Sol said, aparently they've found a nickle deposit bigger than the original not far from the original workings.
At the moment it has been used as a base for the road gangs working on the nearby sections.  It has a resident policeperson so can't be that 'ghostish". 
Someone had an idea to re-establish it as a retirement haven or something at one stage a few years ago.  Will be interesting to see what happens with the way the world ore prices are going.

Down in Vic there are the old gold towns that are only just a rubble collection . You can wonder around & find bits & pices of houss or the layout of a once formal garden that was somebodys pride & joy . lf a detector is run over the ground its anybodys guess what you could turn up . lf you can find somebody that can fill in the blanks as to what went on in the area then the town will come back to life as you imagen the past  :cheers:

Hi Kev, i was hoping we had something closer to here in southern Queensland.

I thought we would've had a few ghost towns around, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

It may be a bit of a drive for you being that it is in far north Qld, but Maytown is an interesting ghost town, complete with tumbleweeds, and apparently it's own resident ghosts too. You can't camp right in the old town itself anymore, but nobody is stopping you from hanging around until midnight and scaring yourself silly before heading down the road to camp  ::)

Dog Leg Crossing(NP) is a nice camping area, and the whole Maytown Goldfields area could fill a day or two or ten worth of exploring. It also has about 80km of the most perfectly cambered, four laned, roller coaster of a rally track leading out to it  ;D

Also in FNQ is Mt Mulligan.
Nice camp spot and also take a drive out to the old town site at night and turn lights and car off and listen. ;D ;D

The rubbish that news papers print, camped in Maytown 25 years ago, never saw any ghosts. ::)

If there was a ghost town that might have ghosts it would have to be Mt Mulligan,after all there would be a few lost soles there after the terrible mining accident that killed all those miners.

The good lady wife used to live in Greenvale amongst other places. She can give me the heeby jeebies sometimes, let me tell ya.

Don't think it has anything to do with the fact that Greenvale is all but a ghost town now though. She just scares me sometimes is all.

It's not Qld, but boot up Goigle Earth and have a look along the Transcontinental Railway line. Along the Nullarbor Plain, there are loads of ghost towns Along the track which used to be there to service the railway line.

On that note, has anyone here ever crossed the Nullarbor on the track which follows the railway line? I imagine it would be an awesome adventure, loads of the ghost towns to explore on the way, and you would get to experience the real outback but at the same time the train goes by a couple of times a week so if something did to badly wrong it's not like you'll be stuck forever. It would be great to follow the track in one direction, then for the return trip home you could drive on the Tarmac road and have a look at the coastline.

another one not in Qld...we just visited Dalmorton last week whilst on holidays, it's on the old Grafton to Glen Innes Rd. the drive alone is worth going there for, but add in the convict tunnel and ghost town along the way also, and it's a drive i'd highly recommend people do.

G'day Jeepers, just wondering if you may have heard of a book called  Gold And Ghosts . I seem to remember seeing it about 15 or more years ago, may still be in print??
Should be able to get from any gold or fossicking town such as Clermont in Qld, there is a chap who deals in detectors at the c/park there, he may have a copy.

Just completed a 2000K trip to Carnarvon Gorge (via Dalby, Roma etc) followed by Cania Gorge. The town of Monto unfortunately just about fits the bill of a "Ghost Town"

Geez Woody, i've searched this out and they vary from around $500 to $700 per volume, with me wanting vol 3 for the areas i have an interest in.

Gotta love Monto huh, been a few years since i've been there now though.

G'day Jeepers, your right they sure are well priced, sounds like a collectors item. I wonder if you might be able to get one from a library ? I no longer move in those circles or I may have been able to borrow one and copy relevant info. I can't think of any other ideas .
