Hello Together,

Just wondering did someone treat his trailer with fish oil or lanolin to
help to delay rust?

If yes any tips,what did you use, where did you buy it?

steve223 I use lanolin.

Everytime we go beach camping. I spray it on a few days before we leave. I spray everything under the trailer and the Patrol, especially where sand is known to go in between seams such as under wheel arches, body mounts etc. 

The sand will stick to it, but that's the idea. When we come home from the trip I degrease the Lanolin straight off with the sand stuck to it. very easy.

Its all natural and doesn't stink like fish.

Galvanising   

I'm a fan of Lanotec, too, I use it on hubs, axles, springs etc. If you wish to remove it after beach running as suggested by bnk88, Lanotec produces a citrus-based degreaser although I haven't used it yet

However, I uses Lanotec for permanent protection and Inox for periodic protection

excellent will give that a go, I assume you do that after a full clean or respray?

have a bit surface rust after the 3 weeks tour and a lot of the original paint is chipped off

Steve you can use the lanolin on any painted surface on the camper but If the rust is only surface rust,  it might be wise to repair it now rather than let it continue. By the sounds of it, it may only need a quick wire buff and a repaint in the damaged area.  What is causing the surface rust? Is it from stones, sand or rocks blasting the trailer while being towed, damaging the paint back to raw metal?

It might pay to investigate that and extend you mud flaps or stone guard etc. to help protect it.

As for removal I use the Supercheap $2 special degreaser......usually takes 4-5 cans to do the Patrol and camper.

Then as GeeTee said I also reapply the Lanolin after cleaning.

yes just surface rust from 3 weeks off road driving and stones and dirt chipping away, so I assume give it a good brush with a wire brush and light sand and then go with spray can over it?

I can fully vouch for lanotec.   I have used it for years . Our old beloved Holden Jackaroo went on many trips to the beach and after 10 years still didn't have any rust in her.

Brilliant stuff.

BTW, I never cleaned the lanotec off.  Always figured the coating helped protect the metal.

Give it a spay with Lanolin and then tow it up a dusty road. The dust and dirt will stick to the lanolin and that stops the sand sticking to it when you towing it up the beach. Its not the pettiest but it works well.

Its just a follow on from all the old boys who used to spray the bottoms of their cars with sump oil. Lanotec smells heaps better though.
