POLL POLL POLL Do your camper rims and car match

Ok Swaggers,

I have started a poll to establish what we all have , the long and short is that it will cost average about $600 for a new braked axle to have the rims the same so I have allowed 2 votes per person , vote on the first 4 then if you would spend $600 vote again on the last one . Hope that makes sense.

I know the tyre size is the same, but as the "Pig" has weird rims I am not sure what way they would go. Time to see I guess. Maybe there should be I have not tried to find out check box too?

Mine all match, and if they didn't, I'd pay the money to have it that way.......(hang on......I did).

Apart from the obvious multiple spares benefit, it allows all wheels to be cycled from car-camper-car to even out wear. Camper tyres tend to die of old age, rather than wear, if they don't get a run on the car.

Just my way of doing it.......

No mine don't match and am happy with it that way.
Why?? well I expect to have my camper for the foreseeable future but the tug will change every couple of years. Too dam expensive to keep playing catch up.
Happy with the associated logistics of the mismatch.

That's a valid point, if you change your car or camper fairly often.

Yeah, I hadn't considered that. Ours puts 150kg onto the tow bar......not a lot for a flip-over, but those dual-cab utes are a worry. Good to be cautious.....

I specced matching rims and same as tug sized tyres when buying the new Omeo. And i would have spent the $$$$ to make it so, if I'd gone for a pre-lioved CT.

I'm just flat out too tight to go and spend the money.

The CT is different to the Jeep, geez, my work trailer id different to the van too.

I would have done it if I could but the centre hole of the Pajero wheels are just too small!

I go by the motto: Have good tyres and watch your pressures!... and this has served me very well in that I have never had a puncture on car nor camper.

My aussie swag has different rims to car and am looking into changing. I propose maybe we put a list up or start something in here maybe we can get some happy swaps with rims and hubs from others who also want to swap and maybe cash adjustment for tyre life left or state/type of rims etc.

I offer to swap for 6 stud same suitable hubs for my 03 Aussie swag with the independant suspension, 2 x 5 stud hubs and 3 x sunraiser wheels 16x8 with ALL COUNTRY RADIAL XT LT235/85/16 tyres by 3 of about 60-70% tread left i would approximate.

what do people think....

Matching rims and tyre size, 285/75R16, 5 stud IFS cruiser rims. I had to lengthen the axle 120mm, lower the springs 100mm and extend the handbrake lever on the brakes 70mm. I carry the spare for the camper under the cruiser in the original spare position because it doesn't fit on the camper and the cruiser spare on a rear wheel carrier.

they used to match exactly when I had the trol.........not anymore though. They will again one day when I have the coin to do so. For no other reason than aesthetics. I have two spares so I do not need to share them, just think it looks the goods :)

At the moment the tyre sizes are differant, so I can't fit the camper rims to the car as my car is permanent 4WD, but this will change very soon.

I'm still only halfway through my conversion. I have the three GU IV rims, and the 33" KM2s for them, but the rims only just fit with the 31" Grand Treks on them.

I need to:

- cut the trailer guards off and re-fit them higher up, or
- lift the trailer by cutting the spring hangers off, welding a metre of Duragal to each side of the chassis and reweld the spring hangers (that's what Jimboomba does for big wheels)
- flip the hitch to accommodate the extra height - I have a DO35 so no door clearance issues there

Then buy a new axle that is maybe 75-100mm wider, to get the same track as the Patrol and allow the 33" tyres some room on the inside for suspension flex. I already have electric brakes and Patrol/LC stud pattern so no probs there.

Then get some work done so the tent can handle the 5" lift. The zip-out floor helps, I could just get a strip made up with zips either side to go between the floor and the tent walls.

But all in all, a fair bit of work and expense, and it's fine on the GU IV rims and road tyres for what I have been using it for, hence the procrastination.

We use the same wheel but only 31's on the CT and currently 33's on the Patrol so yes they are all interchangeable if really necessary.

We use BFG All Terrains on the CT and when the KM2's wear out on the Patrol we are going back to All Terrains in 31's so we will have 8 tyres in rotation......that will see us out for a few years :D

Ive just recently got some steel rims to match the Patrol with 285/75 MTZ's.

while I was doing this I machined a new axle at work to get the track of the trailer the same as the Patrol to help it tow better in the sand when we do beach trips.

So now we have 8 MTZ's that I can rotate and hopefully get a long run out of.

Mine all matched, and I paid extra when ordering the trailer to get the wheels and tyres that were the same size. The wheels are different (alloys on the car, sunnies on the camper), but they fit vis-versa.

I like it for the reason GeoffA has already noted - I can get the camper tyres re-mounted onto the car's alloys and rotate them all around to even out the wear. An expensive set of 8 x BFG's - I want to ensure I get the maximum life out of them. Initially I did it for the "two spare tyres when out bush", but I've never had a single flat in the BFG's, let alone two. That said, a mate of mine went camping a few weeks back, and did 4 tyres in about 1.5 hrs, so...

Interestingly though, I didn't tick the "I would spend the $600 to make them all the same" option in the poll. While I spent more than that myself, if I already had a camper I'm not sure I'd pay that much money just to get them to match. It seems a lot of money. That said, if your current axle isn't braked, then I'd definitely upgrade to a braked axle. If it was roughly the same price to get one that matched wheels while you were at it - why not. IE, the brakes would be my motivation for swapping the axle, not the wheels - they'd just be a happy bonus.

Am I making any sense? Sure doesn't feel like it...

Cheers!
Matto :)

GU IV Patrol and KK Ltd with 16 X 8 Kings wheels with 285X75X16 tyres, 9 of the things.

16" tyres are cheaper than the standard  17", sort of paid for the rims with the price difference, and 16"
 tyres more readily available.
