NT Open speed limits at risk - Old Harold again
« on: September 13, 2012, 11:36:11 AM »
Old harold has been quiet for a while, doing nothing for pedistrians again

Quote
ROAD safety experts have declared war on the Territory over open speed limits.

The Pedestrian Council of Australia and a trauma committee made up of Australia's top surgeons said it would:

ASK the Federal Government to cut road funding to the NT Government;

CALL on the World Health Organisation to "shame" the Territory;

PRESSURE "every tourist body that will listen" to stop promoting the NT as a holiday destination; and URGE travellers to boycott the Territory "because it's not safe".

Good to see these experts have researched where the majority crash fatalities occur in the NT. Last time I checked on the NT Police media board (admittedly 6 - 7 years ago) UP TO DATE OLD HAROLD EH! of accidents most occurred in built up areas, where there is an imposed speed limit (50 - 80 km/hr). Whilst there are deaths on NT Highways the overall road toll has still increased in some years with the majority still in residential areas after the NT Speed limit was introduced (cont)"
wheredotheyoccur?

Pedestrian Council head Harold Scruby, who is on a Royal College of Surgeons road safety body, said the CLP Government's clear intention to drop the 130km/h speed limit on long stretches of highways was "disgusting".

"We'll go feral if they do this," he said.

"It's a hillbilly approach to road safety."

Mr Scruby said the Territory would be the only place in the western world with an open speed limit on undivided roads.

He said the whole of Australia bore the cost of high-speed road crashes.

It costs an average of $18 million to care for a brain-damaged accident victim. "That cost is not carried by the Territory Government but by the whole of Australia," Mr Scruby said.

Territory police are opposed to dropping the 130km/h speed limit...  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

These retards need to do some maths

Go from 130kph to 110kph

Big deal so for a 500km day you will need to drive for about an extra 45 mins.

It is ironic when i was up there that the only cars that you saw doing 130kph were cars that were either of an age, condition or dodgy mod that should not be doing 130kph.

when i was up there last year, the only vehicles i saw doing 130kph and that passed us were mine vehicles, nobody else can afford the fuel...lol. actually i tell a lie, i was passed by one other guy who wasn't in a mine vehicle and he was doing over 130kph i reckon, he was in a very new sports car, and if it was me i'd have been doing the same thing he was doing  :cheers:

I know certain people on this forum try to get their thread count as high as possible.........

But seriously is Harold trying to get a record of how many people he can P1$s off???

Ask why you cant do 80 in a 60 zone and usually the reason is that its not saf to drive at that speed in that area.
So then why can't you go faster on an open road in the middle of nowhere???

The people he's trying to stop are fools who would ignore the limit anyway.

Surely his axe must be getting thin by now???

I had heard that the road toll in NT actually increased when they changed from unrestrictred to 130kph. They shoudl revert to open limits and measure the impact.

Harold* gets the blame, but I think it is the people who makes road signs that constantly campaign for changes  ;D

* Scruby is a prize idiot, who's mindless campaign against drivers is a disgrace.

I agree... The mods should remove the post count so nobody can see it. It serves no purpose.

He must be a miserable person to be around always trying to ban things that have nothing to do with him. His "Council" is just him, no big body authorized by anyone.

Just a note though he and his legal pals constantly search the net for mentions about him so tread carefully with what you say about him.

You can't spell 'funeral' without 'fun', nor 'manslaughter' without 'laughter'

A lot of you have been up our way as well. We have 110 up here but hardy ever do so. 130 is fine for the roads we have. They, the idiots should be made to come and sit in a  car for 8 hours just to get from here to halls creek and see how they like it.

Seriously. If you hit  a cow at 110 your F..ed. at 130 it happened two tenths of F all faster.

The basic premise that a 500 km trip will only take 45 mins longer BUT, if one is a Territorian living in Darwin for example, 500 km would get one to Larrimah. Not too many Darwinians stay at Larrimah in my experience.  Most try for Tenant Ck or Alice.

Alice is a 1500 km trip, achievable in 12 hours at 130 kph but 14 at 110 kph.  I've done it many a time, both ways. And I'd rather be doing 130 than 110.
