Once in a Blue Moon
« on: August 31, 2012, 06:41:23 PM »
Well swaggers, here's your chance!

Ever heard the saying "every once in a blue moon"?

Well, tonights the nite, the second full moon of this calendar month, it wont happen again till 2015.

So, if you've ever wanted to give something up, start something, finish something, get lucky,  turn over a new leaf or just plain have fun, tonights the nite.

Note, SHMBO (who works in the dementia wing of a nursing home) has just called in sick for the nite.  Apparently full moons dont go down well with some clients!.

My Blue Moon moment will be celebrating it with a Scotch or 2.

What about you??

Despite the name, blue moons don't appear blue.

Instead, the term refers to the second full moon in a calendar month, a rare phenomenon given the fact that a full lunar cycle is 29 days and there are only 30 or 31 days in every month except February.

Astronomer David Reneke said it was unclear where the "blue" moniker derived from, but was at least 400 years old.

Unlike the "super-moon", that appeared in May when the moon was much closer than normal to Earth, the blue moon tonight holds little scientific interest.

The moon occasionally appears blue but that is due to atmospheric pollution.
